Minimum requirements

Police Officer minimum requirements:

  • US Citizen
  • Must be 20 years and 180 days of age at the time you apply
  • Must have a high school diploma or G.E.D., no college required
  • No felony convictions or offenses that would be a felony if committed in Texas
  • Normal hearing in both ears and vision that is correctable to 20/40 binocular
  • Must pass a departmental background investigation, polygraph, medical, and psychological evaluation prior to being hired
  • Must possess a valid driver license (if out of state, be eligible to obtain valid Texas Drivers License)
  • Acceptable driving history
  • Be of good moral character

NEOGOV 5183731 Minimum Job Requirements: High School Diploma or equivalent. TCOLE certified Peace Officer. Valid Driver's License without restriction except "A". Must have Texas Driver's License within 30 days of hire. Citizen of the United States, 21 years of age, clear driving record, no felony convictions. Completion of NIMS training after hire. Physical: vision 20/20 without color blindness.

City age is a split. Careers: 20 years and 180 days at apply. NEOGOV 5183731: 21 years of age. TCOLE's own floor is 21, or 18 with an associate's degree, 60 semester hours, or an honorable discharge after two years of active service (37 TAC 217.1(b)(1)(A)). All three lines are published. The city does not publish a 21-44 age cap for Wylie PD. Read TCOLE peace officer license requirements.

Education is a high school diploma or GED, no college required.

Citizenship is U.S. citizen on Careers and NEOGOV. TCOLE's matching rule is 37 TAC 217.1(b)(17): U.S. citizen, or a legal permanent resident who is an honorably discharged veteran with two years of service and has applied for citizenship.

A valid driver's license, Texas within 30 days of hire if out of state, is the city line. TCOLE does not require a Texas license. TCOLE's floor is not prohibited from operating a motor vehicle, 37 TAC 217.1(b)(8).

City criminal bar on Careers and NEOGOV is no felony convictions. NEOGOV supplemental questions also ask family-violence conviction, felony community supervision, and firearms bar. TCOLE's Class A bar is conviction or court-ordered community supervision, lifetime (37 TAC 217.1(b)(4), (b)(6)). Only Class B carries the ten-year lookback. TCOLE bars conviction or community supervision for family violence, 217.1(b)(7). The city line is felony-only. TCOLE's floor also covers Class A. Both are published; a candidate has to clear both.

Vision is a split. Careers: correctable to 20/40 binocular. NEOGOV: 20/20 without color blindness. Those two lines disagree. Expect the 20/20 NEOGOV line until the city says otherwise.

The test, PAT as printed

Selection Process: written examination (reading comprehension, grammar, mathematics, writing). Certified applicants and lateral transfers may be exempt from the exam. A driver's license with photo is required for test admission.

Physical fitness is a four-minute row. All applicants row a predetermined minimum distance from the DPS 4 Minute Row table by age, sex, and weight. Not CPAT. Not Wylie Fire PAT. The fire careers physical-ability line is a fire test, not the police row.

Then Personal History Statement, oral board (four to five members, 30 minutes to one hour), interview with the Chief or command staff, background, polygraph, psychological evaluation, medical and drug screen.

Academy length

The live public door is certified or about to obtain certification. Recruit bulletin 5232704 is not on the live board. The city has not published a named recruit academy hour count. This guide does not print a 20, 28, 29, 32, or 40 week academy. Selection Process: non-TCOLE-certified recruits hired by Wylie PD attend a police academy; Wylie PD uses, but is not limited to, the Collin College Law Enforcement Academy at Collin College Central Campus. All new officers, laterals or academy graduates, complete a 4-6 week Mini Academy, then a structured 16-week Field Training Program. Laterals may be eligible for a shortened FTO.

Lateral Officers: experienced peace officers may be exempt from the written examination. Lateral applicants may be eligible for an abbreviated Field Training Program. Starting salary corresponds with previous years of full-time law enforcement and the Wylie Police Department pay plan.
