How to Become a Police Officer in Frisco, Texas
Frisco will pay a police recruit $86,600 a year ($7,216.67 a month) on the City of Frisco POLICE PAY PLAN FY26, effective December 29, 2025: Police Officer Recruit (no experience), grade 40, job 2004. After academy, and once sworn in by the Chief, the recruit footnote moves you to Police Officer $90,750. Career Opportunities reprints a different top-out sentence: as of January 1, 2026, officers currently top out at $112,750, not including incentives. That dollar is the plan's lump-sum column, not the 60-month base of $108,414. Those are not one number.
Frisco is not a Chapter 143 civil service department. The Career FAQ says the agency is at-will. Do not map Dallas or Irving eligibility-list rules onto this page.
The license is TCOLE's. The job is Frisco's. Those are two gates. The Texas sequence is in How to Become a Police Officer in Texas. The license rules are in TCOLE peace officer license requirements. This page is Frisco's own documents.

What Frisco actually is
Recruiting lives on Career Opportunities. joinfriscopd.com redirected there on 2026-08-21. The department home is Police, 7200 Stonebrook Parkway, Frisco, TX 75034. The old CivicPlus path /186/Police is the Contract Postal Unit / NTTA TollTags page. Do not send anyone there.
This page does not print a sworn headcount. Directory sworn is 0 because no roster was opened.
Recruiting Unit phone: 972-292-6116. Fax: 972-292-6077. Non-emergency: 972-292-6010. Main: 972-292-6000. The November 2023 recruiting flyer prints EST. 1965 and calls Frisco a CALEA-accredited agency. Those lines are flyer copy. This page does not re-check CALEA's live listing, and the flyer has no FY26 pay cells.
Minimum requirements
Career FAQ is the floor printed for Police Officer. The two live city GovernmentJobs postings (NEOGOV) reprint most of it and then split.
Citizenship. U.S. citizen (FAQ and both cards). Both cards spell it "Unites States citizen." That is their wording. TCOLE also licenses a legal permanent resident who is an honorably discharged veteran with two years of service and has applied for citizenship (37 TAC 217.1(b)(17)). Frisco's printed line is citizen only.
Age. Two measuring points, both live, not averaged:
- FAQ and Police Recruit / Out of State Lateral Officer, NEOGOV 5095677: at least 20 years of age to apply, 21 upon graduating from the Police Academy.
- Police Officer (TCOLE Certified and Texas experienced only), NEOGOV 3891978: at least 21 years of age.
If you are 20, read those two lines against the door you are actually using. TCOLE's own floor is 21, or 18 with an associate's degree, 60 semester hours, or an honorable discharge after two years of active service (37 TAC 217.1(b)(1)(A)). Frisco's recruit door is 20 to apply and 21 at academy graduation; the Texas-experienced card is 21. Those are Frisco's measuring points, not TCOLE's. Read TCOLE peace officer license requirements before you spend the application.
Education. Two floors:
- FAQ: applicants for Police Officer only need a high school diploma or GED. No college credit is required. NEOGOV 5095677 matches: high school diploma or GED.
- NEOGOV 3891978: high school diploma or GED with 12 college credit hours for the GED.
Those two floors are not averaged into "some college." The 12-hour line is on the Texas-experienced card, and it is tied to the GED wording on that card.
Driver's license. Both cards: State of Texas driver's license at the time of employment (Frisco hiring). 5095677's screening questions also allow obtaining one within 30 days of employment. TCOLE does not require a Texas license; 37 TAC 217.1(b)(8) is that you are not prohibited from operating a motor vehicle.
Criminal history. FAQ: you must meet TCOLE licensing requirements. You cannot have been convicted of a Class B misdemeanor or higher in the past 10 years, been convicted of family violence, or ever been convicted of a Class A misdemeanor or felony. Both NEOGOV cards ask about convictions and deferred adjudication on those same classes, plus family violence. TCOLE also bars community supervision for family violence, and a Class A conviction is a lifetime bar (37 TAC 217.1(b)(4), (b)(6), (b)(7)).
Drugs. FAQ: traffic tickets and drug usage are evaluated case by case. 5095677 asks whether you have used or possessed marijuana within the last three years. Those are not the same sentence.
Military. FAQ: no extra credit for prior military service. Both cards: discharge under honorable conditions if you served. GI Bill benefits are possible during the academy and during field training, per the FAQ.
Other 5095677 screens. Related to or living with a Frisco PD employee. Currently employed by the City of Frisco and still in the probationary period. Scheduled and no-showed a Police Officer exam in the last six months. Tested for a Police Officer position with the City of Frisco in the last three months. If you are currently TCOLE certified as a Texas Peace Officer, that card tells you to use the Texas Certified Officer application instead.
Step-by-step hiring process
1. Pick the live door, then apply online. Career Opportunities is the hub. Two police-officer cards were 200 on 2026-08-21:
- Recruits and out-of-state laterals: NEOGOV 5095677, job 202302246, opened September 29, 2025, closing Continuous, salary $86,600.00 Annually.
- TCOLE-certified Texas officers with experience: NEOGOV 3891978, job 202201378, opened January 26, 2023, salary $82,781.00 - $103,707.76 Annually. Screening question 1 on that card asks whether you are currently TCOLE certified as a Texas Peace Officer with at least one year of experience post academy at a Texas law enforcement agency.
$82,781-$103,707.76 is a 2023 pay field. It is not the FY26 plan. The plan wins for wages. An older recruit card, NEOGOV 4140957 at $80,750, opened September 1, 2023. That is not the 2026 recruit wage.
FAQ: resumes are not accepted with the application. An application is required and must be completed online before you test. The application window closes two weeks prior to the test date. Once an application is in, the department contacts you to select a date.
2. Sit in pending until a written exam date is set. FAQ: online applications for Police Officer remain in pending status until a written exam date is known. When a date is set, applicants in pending who meet the minimums get an invitation. That wait can be a few days or a few weeks. This page does not invent the next test date.
3. Written exam, then the row the same day. FAQ: 25 minutes to review the written exam study guide, then 100 multiple-choice questions, one hour and 45 minutes. Pass is 70 or higher. Every applicant who passes rows the same day. A separate FAQ line says "No study guide is provided." Both lines are published. The exam covers applying police information, observing and remembering details, judgment and logic, following directions, and vocabulary / reading comprehension.
Laterals who qualify for the lateral transfer program, in-state and out-of-state, are not required to take the written test. That line is on the Combined Police Pay Plan v12.05.
4. Background through Chief's interview. FAQ hiring process after the row: background investigation (the slow step; people not selected are notified within 30 days), oral board with three members of the department, then the Chief's interview the same day as a passing oral board. Applicants chosen to move forward leave that day with a conditional job offer.
5. Polygraph, psychological, medical. FAQ: polygraph is off-site by an independent polygrapher, not the same day as the oral and Chief interview, most likely within seven days of the conditional offer. Psychological exam is scheduled the same day as the polygraph when possible, one morning and one afternoon. Medical evaluation and drug screen are a final step, conducted by a local physician used by the City. Applicants 40 and older have a stress test. Fasting instructions are sent beforehand.
Physical agility
Not Dallas's seven-event PAT. Not Irving's 54.7 percent cut. Frisco's Physical Readiness Test is a 2,000-meter indoor row on a Concept2 machine, damper set to 5. The department follows Texas Department of Public Safety standards. Applicants must meet a minimum of 50 percent. The minimum for each applicant is based on age, weight, and gender. Prior to PRT, applicants complete a PAR-F medical questionnaire.
Career FAQ points at the DPS 2000-meter row calculator: https://www.dps.texas.gov/ETR/concept2RowerCalc.htm. On 2026-08-21 that URL redirected to DPS Training Operations. Enter gender, weight, age, and 50 percent in the target VO2 max percentage box; the time listed is the maximum time to row 2000 meters. This page does not print a time table. Technique video named on the FAQ: Concept2 indoor rower technique.
Academy and field training
Career FAQ: the Frisco Police Department has partnered with surrounding agencies to hold several academy dates throughout the year. That is the whole length sentence. This page does not invent a week count.
Occupations Code §1701.2551 sets the basic peace officer course at no less than 720 hours. That is the state floor, not Frisco's academy clock. Daily academy life is in Texas Police Academy: What to Expect. You are paid the recruit cell, $86,600, until you complete the academy and are sworn in. Then the plan moves you to Police Officer $90,750.
Non-certified officers, 5095677: must be able to pass the police academy and state licensing test(s). Must meet and maintain Texas Police Officer License requirements. Both cards still show "TCLEOSE certifications." TCOLE is the commission's current name.

Footnote on 7057: Police Officer Recruit with no experience, upon successful completion of the academy and once sworn in by the Chief, moves to Police Officer Step 1. After each rank reaches its last step, it is eligible for a lump-sum amount up to 5 percent (based on performance, annual budget, and City Manager discretion, with a department average of 4 percent reflected in that last column) each year until the officer moves ranks or the step plan is adjusted.
Career page: officers normally progress one step per year, except the first year of service, when officers move through two steps. POLICE PAY PLAN FY26 footnote: officers who promote to Corporal move to the same step as their Police Officer step, with a flat $6,240 added to Police Officer pay.
NEOGOV 5095677 prints $86,600. NEOGOV 3891978 prints $82,781.00-$103,707.76. Career page prints top-out $112,750 as of January 1, 2026. Directory $90,000 was never a cell. This page uses the plan.
Incentive and certificate pay (Combined Police Pay Plan v12.05, FY 2026 sheet).
- Hiring stipend: $500, one-time
- Fitness: up to $1,200 a year
- TCOLE Intermediate: $60 a month ($720 a year)

- FTO / Communications Training Officer: $125 per pay period while assigned
- Bilingual: Conversational $25 a month, Reading $25 a month, Writing $25 a month. A combined conversational / reading / writing row on the same sheet also prints $25. This page does not stack those rows to $75.
Certification and education pay for laterals begin at the completion of FTO, if eligible, per the lateral packet.
FAQ retirement. Texas Municipal Retirement System. Employees contribute 7 percent. City match 14 percent. Fully vested in 5 years. That block is FAQ copy, not a second pay plan. The FAQ also points at a Combined Police Pay Plan path /422/Salary-Benefits. That URL returned 404 on 2026-08-21. Use DocumentCenter 39761.
FAQ leave and schedule. Tuition reimbursement exists; the policy lives on Human Resources, Tuition Assistance PDF. Benefits hub: City of Frisco benefits. Patrol: 12-hour shifts, 80 hours in each two-week pay period. One week is Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday. The other week is Wednesday and Thursday. One of those patrol days is an 8-hour day so the period lands on 80 hours.
Tattoos (FAQ). Allowed, except body art or tattoos on the head, face, neck, ears, or hands. Cosmetic tattooing and wedding-band tattoos are allowed within reason. Offensive, inappropriate, or unprofessional tattoos must be covered by a standard police uniform. The Chief or designee decides. 5095677 asks you to describe tattoos not covered by a standard swimsuit.
Lateral officers
Already licensed? Two doors.
Texas-experienced TCOLE officers. Career page CTA and NEOGOV 3891978. The card wants current TCOLE certification and at least one year of experience after academy at a Texas law enforcement agency. Age 21. The 2023 salary field on that card is not the FY26 wage.
Out-of-state laterals. Same recruit card as new officers, NEOGOV 5095677. Screening question 17 asks whether you are currently working as a certified police officer outside Texas.
Lateral program rules (v12.05). Generally: at least two years of continuous service as a full-time, paid peace officer with a municipality, sheriff's office, or department of public safety within the last 6 months prior to application. Multiple-agency time counts if there were no breaks between agencies and both agencies meet the criteria. If there is a break, only the most recent agency time is considered. College-campus officers and officers from smaller agencies (60 sworn or fewer, and/or serving a population under 30,000) are evaluated case by case. Time in a basic police academy, correctional service, or as a military police officer is not sworn full-time experience for lateral pay grade. The Chief can waive the requirements and has final discretion. Eligible officers are notified in the hiring process, with the police officer step grade noted on hiring forms.
In-state certified officers with experience: hired at the eligible Police Officer step grade up to Step 4, then move to the next higher step at the one-year anniversary. Out-of-state officers with experience: enter at the eligible lateral step up to Police Officer Step 4, with a years-of-service matrix of 2 years = Step 2, 3 years = Step 3, 4 or more years = Step 4. Both the FY26 plan (DocumentCenter 7057, one page) and Combined Police Pay Plan v12.05 label each column with a step number and a time band in the same header cell. On the FY26 officer row: 12 months $93,926, 24 months $97,214, 36 months $100,616. v12.05 names those bands Step 2, Step 3, and Step 4. A lateral capped at Step 4 enters at $100,616 on the FY26 plan.
Laterals in the program, in-state and out-of-state, skip the written test. They still row, and they still run the rest of the process.
How to prepare this month
- Read the two NEOGOV doors against the license you actually hold. If you are TCOLE-certified in Texas with a year after academy, 3891978 is the card the recruit bulletin points you to. If you are new or out of state, 5095677 is the continuous recruit door.
- Run the DPS 50 percent row standard, damper 5, 2000 meters. Do not train Irving's 54.7 percent cut or Dallas's seven events and call it Frisco.
- If you are 20, confirm you will be 21 at academy graduation. If you hold a GED and are using the Texas-experienced door, read the 12-hour line on 3891978.
- Do not calendar Frisco Fire's test. Fire dollars live on DocumentCenter 7056. This slug is police.
Career path inside Frisco PD
Career FAQ names a K9 unit with plans to expand. That is recruiting copy for the menu, not a vacancy list. Promotional ranks on the FY26 plan: Corporal, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Deputy Chief, Assistant Chief. This page does not print those cells as a hiring promise.
Unpaid internships for college criminal-justice students are a separate door on the same Career page: 2.5 GPA, accredited university, background, not on academic probation. Email the Recruiting Unit. That is not the officer application.
What to do this week
Open Career Opportunities. Call the Recruiting Unit at 972-292-6116. Ask which NEOGOV card is the live door for your license, because the Texas-experienced card still lists 2023 wages and the recruit card prints the FY26 recruit cell. Then train the row to 50 percent.
