Grand Prairie Police Hiring 2026: Window Closed

The live City of Grand Prairie careers board on 2026-09-03 lists 34 jobs. Page 1 does not list Police Officer or 5328286. A Detention Officer posting is on that board; that is jail custody, not this Police Officer door. The next Police Officer door is unpublished. Watch that board and Join GPPD.

Grand Prairie will pay a police officer $90,000 a year ($43.2692 an hour) on the City of Grand Prairie Police Civil Service Pay Plan, file Police Pay Plan FY 25-26, effective October 1, 2025: Police Officer GRADE 1, years of service 0. YOS 1 is $91,000. YOS 7+ is $111,255. The plan has no recruit classification. Officers begin at YOS 0. Those dollars did not close with the window.

The Lateral Entry Program reprints those same dollars with different labels: Recruit $90,000, Officer-1-Year $91,00 (that is the page's spelling), through Officer-7-Years $111,255. Those labels are recruiting copy of the plan cells. They are not a second pay plan. NEOGOV 5328286 prints $90,000.00-$111,255.00 annually ($43.27-$53.49 hourly), which is YOS 0 through YOS 7+ rounded.

Grand Prairie is a Chapter 143 department. Police Officer Qualifications disqualifies an applicant who fails the minimums "established by Chapter 143 or the Local Rules."

Join GPPD: "Newly hired police officers will be assigned to patrol duties for a minimum of 2 years before being eligible for other assignments." That is not the 17-week field-training clock below.

Minimum requirements

NEOGOV 5328286, job 2026-00124, was the August 29, 2026 posting. It closed 8/29/2026 8:00 AM Central. Police Officer Qualifications reprints the floor. Police Officer Application and Testing reprints a shorter education list.

Citizenship. Two city lines:

1. NEOGOV 5328286: U.S. Citizen. Supplemental question: "Are you a US Citizen by birth or naturalization?"
2. Qualifications: U.S. Citizen, or legal permanent resident of the United States who is an honorably discharged veteran of the armed forces of the United States with at least two years of service before discharge and has applied for United States citizenship.

TCOLE's own rule, 37 TAC 217.1(b)(17), matches the Qualifications second line. Grand Prairie's civil service door on 5328286 is U.S. Citizen.

Age. A person may take the entrance examination for a beginning position only if they will be at least 21 years of age by the start of the next scheduled academy class. That sentence is on 5328286 and on Qualifications. The next academy class date is not printed on the pages opened for this guide.

If you are 20, Grand Prairie's academy-start rule is 21. TCOLE's own floor is 21, or 18 with an associate's degree, 60 semester hours, or an honorable discharge after two years of active service (37 TAC 217.1(b)(1)(A)). Those are not the same measuring point. Read TCOLE peace officer license requirements before you spend the application.

NEOGOV 3935436, job 2023-00073, asked whether you would be 21-44 as of April 29, 2023, and said a person 45 or older is not eligible for a beginning position. That card closed April 29, 2023. The 45 cap is not on the August 29 door.

Education. Be eligible for certification from TCOLE, and one of these doors on 5328286 and Qualifications:

1. At least forty-eight (48) hours, with at least a 2.0 Grade Point Average, from a college or university accredited by a regional accrediting organization recognized by the United States Department of Education or Council for Higher Education, by the time of hire with the Police Department.
2. At least two (2) years as a regular full-time peace officer for a law enforcement agency prior to the date of the entrance examination.
3. At least two (2) years active-duty military experience in accordance with the definition of Military Service Credit listed in Section 2.1(e), with an Honorable Discharge. 5328286 measures this by the date of hire. Qualifications measures it prior to the date of the entrance examination.
4. Certification issued by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection authorizing fire suppression or fire-cause investigation, or equivalent from another state, for at least two (2) years prior to the date of examination.
5. Certification by the Texas Department of State Health Services as an Emergency Medical Technician/Paramedic, or equivalent from another state, for at least two (2) years prior to the date of the examination.
6. Any license issued by TCOLE for at least two (2) years prior to the date of the examination.
7. Currently employed as, and has worked as, a full-time Grand Prairie Police Department employee for the two (2) years immediately preceding the date of the entrance examination.

The Application and Testing page shortens that list to six bullets: 48 college credit hours, or 2 years active military, or 2 years full-time sworn police officer, or 2 years possessing any TCOLE license, or 2 years as a certified firefighter in any state, or 2 years as a certified EMT or paramedic in any state. That shorthand drops the 2.0 GPA, the hire-date measuring point on the college door, and the two-year GPPD-employee door. Read 5328286.

Driver's record. Qualifications: more than two moving traffic violations and/or at-fault accidents within twenty-four months preceding the date of application is a disqualifier. DWI conviction within ten years preceding the date of application is a disqualifier. TCOLE does not require a Texas license; 37 TAC 217.1(b)(8) is that you are not prohibited from operating a motor vehicle.

TCOLE. Possession of, or eligibility for, certification as a peace officer by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement.

Disqualifiers, from Qualifications. Class B misdemeanor conviction: 10-year disqualifier. Class A misdemeanor at or after age 17, or a felony at any age: permanent. Moral turpitude convictions are case by case. Pending criminal charges other than Class C traffic bar consideration. Inability to read, write, and fluently speak English is a disqualifier. Steroid and prescription-medication abuse is case by case. Marijuana or synthetic marijuana within the last 2 years. Methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin, opium, PCP, or LSD within the last 15 years; three or more occasions of those is permanent. Ecstasy one time within 5 years, or two or more times within 15 years. Selling or distributing marijuana or any controlled substance: permanent. Failed written exam or row: apply for the next exam. Failed background, polygraph, psychological, Chief Level Review, or oral review board: one year from the notification letter. Positive pre-employment drug or alcohol test: permanent. Military discharge under less than honorable conditions: disqualifier.

TCOLE bars. TCOLE makes a Class A conviction a lifetime bar and puts the ten-year lookback on Class B only (37 TAC 217.1(b)(4), (b)(6)). Family violence bars on community supervision as well as conviction (217.1(b)(7)). Those bars are TCOLE's. They are not printed on the Qualifications page opened for this guide.

1. The August 29 posting is closed. NEOGOV 5328286, job 2026-00124, Police Officer, opened May 5, 2026 and closed 8/29/2026 8:00 AM Central. Salary $90,000.00-$111,255.00. Civil service exam Saturday, August 29, 2026, 8:00 a.m., check-in 7:00 a.m., at 305 W. Warrior (South Grand Prairie High School, Early College). That exam morning has elapsed. Join GPPD and Application and Testing still pointed Apply Now at that posting when this guide was first written; that is not a live door today.

NEOGOV 3935436, job 2023-00073, Police Officer, opened February 27, 2023 and closed April 29, 2023 at 8:00 a.m. Central. Exam April 29, 2023. That 2023 posting is not the August 29 door either.

2. Personal History Statement due on exam day. 5328286: applicants are required to have the Personal History Statement complete the day of the Civil Service Exam. The card links the GPPD PHS PDF. Qualifications: birth certificate (original or certified copy) can be submitted at the test or within 10 days with the PHS. DD-214 for military points must be attached to the application or emailed to apardue@gptx.org no later than August 29, 2026 at 8:00 a.m. They will not accept DD-214s after that deadline. Military: 5 extra points on a passing raw score for an honorable discharge.

3. Written exam. Saturday, August 29, 2026. Check-in 7:00 a.m. Central. Exam 8:00 a.m. Location: 305 W. Warrior (South Grand Prairie High School, Early College).

4. Physical agility the same process. 2,000-meter row, Concept2, damper 5, minimum 55 percent. Details live on Qualifications and on Application and Testing. The department's Row Test Calculator is a widget.

5. Oral Review the same day if you pass both. Application and Testing: "We will be conducting Oral Review interviews immediately following for applicants who pass both the written and physical portions."

6. After the row. Application and Testing final evaluations: panel interview, background investigation, polygraph, psychological evaluation, drug testing, and medical examination. The personnel officer sets those appointments.

Physical agility

Grand Prairie's test is the 2,000-meter indoor row on a Concept2 machine, damper set to 5, minimum 55 percent. Passing time depends on gender, age, and weight.

Qualifications: "applicants must score at least 55% to remain eligible for employment." Use the department's Row Test Calculator.

Academy and field training

Two 17-week clocks, plus a patrol-assignment clock. None of them is an academy week count.

Application and Testing: applicants who are not certified as Texas peace officers are required to complete the Grand Prairie Police Academy. Upon successful completion, police recruits will be assigned to the patrol division for 17 weeks of field training.

Lateral Entry Program: lateral police officers who are TCOLE certified will be eligible for an abbreviated training program. This consists of 17 weeks of updates on policies and procedures.

Join GPPD: "Newly hired police officers will be assigned to patrol duties for a minimum of 2 years before being eligible for other assignments."

The basic academy's own week or month count was not printed on Join GPPD, Application and Testing, Qualifications, or Lateral Entry Program. Occupations Code §1701.2551 sets the basic peace officer course at no less than 720 hours. That is the state floor, not Grand Prairie's clock. Lateral probation: 12 months, except that it shall be 18 months if they are required to attend the Basic Police Academy.

Lateral officers

Already licensed? Still the civil service exam door.

To be eligible for lateral pay, a lateral entry applicant shall have at least two (2) years continuous service as a paid, full-time certified peace officer in a law enforcement agency, including out-of-state agencies, as approved by the Chief of Police. The lateral applicant shall have had authority to enforce laws, investigate crimes, make arrests, respond to calls for service, carry a firearm, and use discretion as part of assigned duties. Break in service: not more than three (3) years from leaving the former agency to applying with Grand Prairie Police.

Military police experience does not count as regular full-time peace officer experience.

Lateral applicants complete each step in the civil service hiring process the same as any other applicant. TCOLE-certified laterals: 17 weeks of updates on policies and procedures. Probation 12 months, or 18 months if they must attend the Basic Police Academy.

The Police Lateral program in effect at the time of hire shall be followed for placement in the pay plan. 5328286 says that in those words.
