My Teenager Wants to Be a Firefighter. What Can They Do Before 18?

At 18 they can sit the civil service entrance exam. To be hired they will need TCFP Basic Firefighter plus Texas EMT-Basic, or a paramedic licence, earned at a nearby college academy, because the department's own academy is for people it has already hired.

Explorer Post 1291

The department's 2025 summary describes the program in its own words: Fire Explorer Post 1291 runs through Scouting America as part of the Longhorn Council's Frontier Trails District; the coed program is open to youth ages 14 to 19 who live in Denton County and are interested in exploring a career in the fire service; participants receive hands-on fire service training under the supervision of trained firefighters; and Explorers become eligible for the department's Ride-Along Program, shadowing on-duty crews during shifts. The summary says interested youth can apply through joinexploring.org or contact the department's recruiting office.

On the Exploring site, searching posts near ZIP code 76201 lists "Post 1291 Denton Fire Department" with a department contact and an Apply Now link, read September 8, 2026. No fee, schedule or meeting location is published on the listing; those come from the post once you ask.

A homeschooled student qualifies on the same terms as anyone else: age and Denton County residence, not school enrollment.

Two more Denton programs, for the record

• Fire Camp. A week-long summer day camp for rising fifth graders in Denton ISD, referred by school counselors, covering knots, teamwork and physical agility. Too young for a high school senior, but it shows how early the department starts.
• The Denton ISD high school fire and EMT program. The city's Meet and Confer agreement with the firefighters' association adds one point to the entrance exam grade of an applicant who completed the Denton ISD high school fire program and obtained certification through the Texas Commission on Fire Protection, or the ISD's high school EMT program with certification through the Department of State Health Services. That point exists only for graduates of those programs; it is not available to Explorers as such.

Already in college, with no EMT yet?

The same programs apply, with one age line. The Explorer post runs through age 19, so a first- or second-year student who lives in Denton County may still qualify. Beyond that, the department publishes no internship or volunteer firefighter position, and its 2025 summary ties the ride-along program to Explorers. What a student can do now is concrete: the EMT-Basic course at a nearby college, required under door one regardless and the shorter of the two courses; the entrance exam at 18, which does not require certification to sit; and the recruiting list, which sends the exam notice the day it posts. The road at 18

• The exam. Under Section 143.023 of the Texas Local Government Code a person may not take the entrance exam before 18, and the window closes at 36. The age guide covers how the clock is read. Denton's last exam was January 10, 2026, and the next date is not posted; the exam-date question has the pattern.
• The certifications. To be hired: TCFP Basic Firefighter plus DSHS EMT-Basic, or a DSHS paramedic. Denton's own academy is a hire academy with no civilian enrollment, so the certifications come from the college academies within a short drive; the academies guide lists them with their published tuition.
