The Denton Fire Age Limit: 18 to 35, and When the Clock Is Read

30-second answer. Denton hires firefighters under Chapter 143 of the Texas Local Government Code, so the age rule is the statute's. Section 143.023(a): a person may not take an entrance examination for a beginning position in the fire department unless the person is at least 18 years of age but not 36 years of age or older. Section 143.023(b): a person may not be certified as eligible for a beginning position in a fire department if the person is 36 years of age or older. The department's recruiting page states the same window as at least 18 and not yet 36, ages 18 through 35, as of the date of the entrance exam. The 2026 exam date is not posted.

Two lines, read together

Subsection (a) is about sitting the exam and is measured on exam day. Subsection (b) is about being certified to the eligibility list, which comes after the exam is scored. For almost every candidate the two dates fall inside the same age year and the distinction never matters. If you are 35 on exam day and your 36th birthday falls before the list is certified, subsection (b) is the line to ask the civil service office about before you register. The office is the authority on its own list; this page is not.

Section 143.025(h) keeps an eligibility list in effect for at least six months and at most twelve, and Section 143.025(g) allows one attempt at the examination for a particular list. Section 143.024 requires the exam notice, with the date, time and place, to be posted at city hall and the commission office at least ten days before the exam.

What does not move the age line

• Veterans' preference. Section 143.025(f) adds five points to the examination grade of an applicant who served in the United States armed forces, received an honorable discharge and made a passing grade. It changes the grade, not the age window. The detail is in Military to Denton Fire: veterans' preference.
• Prior certification. A certified firefighter or a licensed paramedic applying to Denton sits the same entrance examination. Section 143.025(b) is plain: a person may not be appointed to the fire department except as a result of the examination. Certification decides whether you can be hired when your name comes up; it does not open a different door around the exam or the age rule.
• A degree. Education pays later and counts toward higher TCFP levels; it does not touch Section 143.023. See Denton Fire education requirements.

Subsection (c) of Section 143.023 was repealed by House Bill 1661, effective September 1, 2023. The subsections quoted above are the ones in force on the read date.

The police rule is different

For a beginning position in a police department the statute sets the 18-year floor and no upper limit in Section 143.023(a); Section 143.023(e) requires eligibility for licensing by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement. Denton Police publishes its own requirements on its listing.

What to do while the date is unposted

• If you are 34 or 35, the exam date matters more to you than to anyone else in the room. Join the Denton Fire recruiting-updates list so the notice reaches you, and read the hiring process so nothing after the exam surprises you.
• If you are 17, prepare now. The written exam is general aptitude, and the free practice set shows the skill areas; you sit it once you are 18 on exam day.
• Everyone: the exam is free under Section 143.025(a), and certification is required to be hired, not to test. The requirements page has the full table.
