Denton Fire Department Hiring Process 2026: From Civil Service Exam to Academy

30-second answer. Denton's process runs in a fixed order: civil service entrance exam, then background investigation and polygraph, then the department's physical ability test, then hire. The last exam was Saturday, January 10, 2026. The next date is not posted, and the city's Waiting List is how you find out.

When is the next exam?

Not yet posted. The last exam was held Saturday, January 10, 2026: the city's NEOGOV Fire Fighter-Recruit bulletin (job 26-0000000306, open January 5 to June 5, 2026) required applicants to have registered for and taken "the Fire Entrance Exam scheduled for January 10, 2026" before applying. The cycle before it ran the same way: the notice for the Saturday, January 11, 2025 exam carried a December 29, 2024 registration deadline and appeared on the Texas Commission on Fire Protection job board on October 4, 2024. Two cycles running, then: notice in the fall, registration closing in late December, exam on a January Saturday.

The careers FAQ, read September 8, 2026, still carries the sentence written before the last exam: "The next Fire Civil Service Exam will take place in 2026 at a time and place which has yet to be determined." Read it as a page that has not been updated, not as a second 2026 exam. The pattern is a planning guide; the notice is the rule.

The city's instruction for candidates is plain: "To be notified of employment opportunities and our next Civil Service Exam, click here to sign up for our Waiting List." That list is the official channel. The recruiting list on this site's Denton page sends the same date the day it posts, with a reading path for the weeks between.

The order of steps

  1. Civil service entrance exam. Denton is a Chapter 143 civil service city, so hiring starts with a scored written exam. The careers page says study guides are available on the Fire and Police Selection, Inc. website, which is the vendor.
  2. Background investigation and polygraph. Packets go to the highest exam scores in the numbers the department needs to fill the next step, so score position matters more than a passing mark.
  3. Physical ability test. The FAQ answers the timing question directly: "Yes, this will be scheduled after the background and polygraph steps are completed." It is the department's own test, not the CPAT. Under the city's Meet and Confer agreement, up to thirty of the highest-ranked applicants who pass the background check are called to it, and an oral interview board follows for those who pass.
  4. Hire, then fire school if you need it. Candidates who arrive with TCFP Basic Firefighter certification do not repeat fire school. Licensed paramedics hired without fire certification attend fire school after hire.

What to have in hand before the notice posts

Because Denton requires certification to be hired rather than training uncertified recruits from scratch, the exam notice is the wrong time to start. Two credentials decide whether you are hireable when your name comes up: TCFP Basic Firefighter plus EMT-Basic, or a Texas paramedic certification or license. The age rule runs to the exam date, 18 through 35, so a candidate near the top of that window should work the math against the date the notice eventually names.
