Denton Fire Education Requirements: What Actually Counts

30-second answer. To apply to Denton Fire you need a high school diploma or GED and a valid Texas driver's license (city Fire Department Careers page and Fire & Emergency Careers FAQ, read September 7, 2026). No college hours are required to test or to be hired. Section 143.023(f) of the Local Government Code requires every firefighter covered by the chapter to be able to read and write English. What decides whether you can be hired is certification, not schooling: TCFP Basic Structure Fire Suppression plus a DSHS EMT-Basic or higher, or a DSHS paramedic. College pays later, as monthly education pay under the department's meet-and-confer agreement and as credit toward higher TCFP certification levels.

The floor: diploma or GED, and a Texas license

The city's page treats a GED the same as a diploma. The license requirement is a Texas license; if you hold another state's license, plan the conversion before you apply, and confirm the timing with the civil service office rather than assuming it can follow later.

What the commission requires, and what it does not

The Texas Commission on Fire Protection's requirements for Basic Structure Fire Suppression certification, as printed on its own steps page: complete a commission-approved training program, pass all four sections of the structure exam with unexpired scores in FIDO, document medical training equal to EMR, ECA, EMT or Paramedic, complete a fingerprint-based background check, and apply and pay through FIDO. Where college counts

1. Education pay. The agreement between the City of Denton and the Denton Fire Fighters Association, IAFF Local 1291, for fiscal years 2023-24 through 2026-27 pays monthly education pay at three tiers in Article 11, Section 1: at least 30 hours toward a degree, an associate's degree, and a bachelor's degree. Education requires successfully completed courses at an accredited college or university; certification and education pays are cumulative; pay starts the first pay period after proof is submitted and verified by the department head. 2. Higher TCFP levels. The commission's certificate page lists six college credits in fire science or fire technology, which it defines to include fire science, emergency medicine, emergency management and public administration, as one option for moving from Basic to Intermediate and on up, alongside its A-list and B-list courses. Each level carries its own monthly certification pay at Denton.

What does not count

• A fire science degree does not substitute for TCFP certification or for the entrance exam. Section 143.025(b): a person may not be appointed to the fire department except as a result of the examination.
• A degree does not change the age window in Section 143.023; see the age limit and when it is measured.
• Coursework in progress does not count toward education pay until the transcript shows completed courses.
