TCFP Certification: The Path for Denton Fire Candidates

30-second answer. Denton hires certified. Door one to hire is Texas Commission on Fire Protection Basic Structure Fire Suppression plus a DSHS EMT-Basic or higher; door two is a DSHS paramedic, who attends fire academy after hire (city careers FAQ). The commission's own steps page lists what Basic certification takes: a commission-approved training program, a pass on all four sections of the structure exam with unexpired scores in FIDO, documented medical training equal to EMR, ECA, EMT or Paramedic, a fingerprint-based background check, and an application with payment in FIDO. Out-of-state firefighters register IFSAC seals or request a records review. Each higher level, Intermediate, Advanced and Master, carries monthly certification pay at Denton.

The five requirements, in the commission's order

1. Training. Complete a commission-approved Structure Fire Suppression program as outlined in Chapter 1 of the Certification Curriculum Manual. The academies within reach of Denton are in fire academies near Denton. The Denton Fire Department's own academy is hire-first: it trains paramedics the department has already hired, and certified firefighters do not repeat it.
2. Exam. Pass all four sections of the structure exam. Scores live in FIDO and expire; if yours have expired, the commission requires retesting before certification. Testing runs at regional sites and online testing centers; on August 21, 2026 the commission announced a new online testing center at North Central Texas College in Flower Mound, scheduled through FIDO.
3. Medical training. Upload proof of EMR, ECA, EMT or Paramedic training or certification through the Submissions page in FIDO. For Denton this is not optional in practice: door one requires EMT-Basic at hire anyway, which is why EMT school comes first or alongside the academy.
4. Background. A fingerprint-based background check through IdentoGo, using the commission's FAST-Pass.
5. Apply. Apply and pay in FIDO; the certificate prints from the Records page. The commission does not mail hard copies.

A TEEX course completion certificate that carries the TEEX Pro Board seal number and the commission's Training Prior Approval number, completed within the past two years, may exempt a candidate from the commission's exam; it is registered in FIDO under Register TEEX Proboard.

Transferring to Texas

The commission recognizes IFSAC certificates from other jurisdictions for basic structural fire protection and a list of other disciplines. An IFSAC-certified firefighter creates a FIDO account, registers the seal with Form TCFP-020, uploads medical training, and applies for Basic Structure Fire Fighter certification. A firefighter trained in a non-IFSAC jurisdiction submits a records review request on Form TCFP-045 with the non-refundable review fee the commission prints on its transfer page; if the training is deemed equivalent, the commission's skills evaluation and examination follow. Fire and EMS both move: the Texas EMS certification side is in out-of-state firefighter to Texas. Military applicants have their own commission page, and Denton's five-point rule is in veterans' preference.

Levels, and what Denton pays for them

Basic is the hiring credential. Intermediate, Advanced and Master are upgrades earned with professional development the commission counts three ways: six college credits in fire science or fire technology; a mix of A-list and B-list courses; or three college credits plus one A-list or four B-list courses. Training used for one level cannot be reused for the next. At Denton each level carries monthly certification pay under the meet-and-confer agreement; the figures are in certification, specialty and overtime pay.

Where the exam fits

Certification is required to be hired, not to sit Denton's civil service entrance exam. The exam comes first; background packets go to the highest scores; the department's physical ability test follows the background and polygraph.
