Yes. If you are paying for one class this semester, take EMT first. TCFP will not issue Basic Structure Fire Suppression until you document EMR, ECA, EMT, or paramedic training. EMT school is the cheaper test of patient care, and 64 percent of 2020 NFIRS fire department runs were EMS and rescue. Do not wait on a Houston or Austin hire list to learn that.

Does Texas Require EMT Training to Become a Certified Firefighter?

TCFP requires medical training equal to EMR, ECA, EMT, or paramedic to hold Basic Structure Fire Suppression. The live Basic tab also requires a commission-approved fire program, all four sections of the structure exam with unexpired FIDO scores, a fingerprint check, and apply-and-pay (TCFP Basic Structure Fire Suppression, retrieved 2026-08-21).

The DOCUMENT EMERGENCY MEDICAL TRAINING list is Emergency Medical Responder, Emergency Care Attendant, Emergency Medical Technician, and Paramedic. A completion certificate, wallet card, National Registry, or TxDSHS upload counts. That is a certificate rule with no exceptions. It is not a rule that EMT school must finish before academy orientation. Recruits in Houston's and San Antonio's in-house academies complete the medical piece on the department's clock.

Do Texas Fire Departments Require EMT Certification Before They'll Hire You?

No statewide hire rule. Certificate and hire are different doors.

Denton wants TCFP Basic plus DSHS EMT-Basic, or a DSHS paramedic, at hire (how to become a firefighter in Denton). EMR is enough for TCFP. It is not enough for Denton.

Houston will hire a non-certified trainee into an academy that includes fire and EMT, about 9 months, or take an already-certified applicant (TCFP plus DSHS EMT Basic or higher) into about 3 months. Austin requires eligibility for future TCFP and DSHS credentials, not the cards in hand. It is not currently accepting cadet applications. Academies are slated for June and October 2026, contingent on operational needs (Austin Fire hiring process, retrieved 2026-08-21).

San Antonio trains in-house: a 940-hour, 25-week fire program plus a 200-hour EMT curriculum, about five and one-half months. If you already hold NREMT, you skip the Registry exam and still sit the five-week EMS block (SAFD cadet phase, retrieved 2026-08-21).

That is a regional pattern, not a Texas-wide rule.

How Long Does EMT School Take Compared to a Fire Academy?

NHTSA's 2021 National EMS Education Standards (amended February 24, 2025) say EMT course length should be based on competency, not hours, and the consensus opinion is a minimum of 150 clock hours across didactic, laboratory, clinical, and field (EMS Education Standards 2021 PDF, linked from ems.gov/education, retrieved 2026-08-21). That is consensus, not a statute.

Alvin College's EMT-Basic is Semester 1: EMSP 1208, EMSP 1160, and EMSP 1501, 9 semester credits (Alvin EMT program, retrieved 2026-08-21). Then NREMT.

Fire academy clocks, by employer: TEEX face-to-face 12 weeks and 545 hours at Brayton; TEEX blended 16 weeks (12 online, 4-week skills camp). Dallas Fire-Rescue academy 28 weeks. Houston non-certified about 9 months (the city's overall academy disclaimer is 7 to 9 months). San Antonio about 25 weeks of fire plus the EMT block. Those are different employers, not one statewide academy length.

What Happens If You Struggle With Fire Academy Without Your EMT Already Done?

You still owe TCFP a medical document before Basic issues. Fail EMT early. Do not fail it inside a fire academy that already assumed you would pass.

Will You Actually Use Your EMT Certification on the Job?

Yes. In 2020, fire departments reported 26,959,000 runs to NFIRS. 17,297,200 of those, 64 percent, were EMS and rescue. 1. Finish a DSHS-approved EMT course. Sit NREMT. That is the cheap proof.
2. If the target is Denton or another cards-on-hire suburb, add a TCFP-approved academy. TEEX face-to-face is 12 weeks and 545 hours at Brayton.
3. If the target is Houston, Austin, or San Antonio, you can apply without the cards. EMT first is half of Houston's certified door; add TCFP Basic and the certified academy is about 3 months. It also lets you skip SAFD's Registry exam and satisfies TCFP when the academy ends.
4. Do not wait on a department list to learn whether you can treat patients.
