Denton requires Texas Commission on Fire Protection certification before hire for anyone who is not a licensed paramedic, and the Denton Fire Department Academy is a hire academy, not an open-enrollment program. The department's own academy is not a door
The city's careers FAQ states that schooling for certifications you may need is covered by the department, and the Denton Fire Department Academy record on this site is explicit: no civilian tuition, a hire academy, not an open-enrollment tuition program. You do not enroll in it. You are hired, and if you arrived as a licensed paramedic without fire certification, the department sends you through it. For everyone else, certification comes first, from a program like the four below.

NCTC is the one in Denton County. Collin College is the one that publishes a single all-in figure for fire plus EMT, which is the exact pair Denton's door-one requirement asks for.
What to check before you enroll
- Window status. Each academy's page on this site prints its application window as the school publishes it, dated to the day it was read. Cohorts close; do not plan around a status you read a month ago.
- Whether EMT is bundled. Denton's non-paramedic door needs TCFP Basic Firefighter plus EMT-Basic. Collin College prints a combined program; the others publish fire certification and EMT separately.
- The TCFP exam fee. Weatherford prints $180 for TCFP testing inside its course fee; NCTC lists the exam fee as an additional cost. The commission exam is the credential; the academy is the preparation.
- The age math. Denton's exam-date rule is 18 through 35. A one-year certificate program plus EMT should be counted against the date of the next Denton exam, which the city has not yet set for 2026.
