Academy First or EMT School First? The Denton Fire Answer
For Denton the order is set by the two doors to hire. Door one is TCFP Basic plus EMT-Basic, and the commission will not issue the fire certificate without documented EMS training, so EMT comes first or alongside the academy. Door two is a paramedic licence on its own; the department puts you through fire academy after hire and pays for paramedic school for door-one hires.

Academy First or EMT School First? The Denton Fire Answer
30-second answer. For Denton the order is set by the two doors to hire, both printed on the city's careers FAQ. Door one is TCFP Basic Structure Fire Suppression plus a DSHS EMT-Basic or higher. Door two is a DSHS paramedic on its own; a paramedic hired without fire certification attends fire academy after hire. The commission will not issue the fire certificate without documented EMS training, so for door one EMT comes first or alongside the academy. You pay for firefighter and EMT school; if you are hired, the department pays for paramedic school.
Door one: EMT, then the academy
The Texas Commission on Fire Protection lists documented medical training equal to EMR, ECA, EMT or Paramedic among its requirements for Basic certification, and Denton requires EMT-Basic or higher at hire. Put those two facts together and the sequence writes itself: an EMT course first, or in the same season as the academy, and the fire certificate after both. A candidate who finishes the academy without EMT has a training record and no certificate; a candidate who finishes EMT without the academy has half of door one. The academies within reach are in fire academies near Denton, and the EMT course itself in how to become an EMT.
Door two: paramedic first, fire academy on salary
A DSHS paramedic is hireable without fire certification. The department sends that hire through fire academy after hire, on the payroll, and once licensed and hired the paramedic pays in the agreement apply: Paramedic Pay each month and Medic Assignment Pay by the hour while assigned to ride a Medic (figures in certification, specialty and overtime pay). The trade is time before hire: a paramedic program is measured in semesters, not weeks, and it is paid for by you. The program road is in how to become a paramedic, and the two doors side by side in EMT or paramedic: which door into Denton Fire.
Who pays for what
The city's FAQ is plain: you pay for firefighter and EMT school; if you are hired, the department pays for paramedic school. Read that as the cost of each door. Door one costs two courses before hire and the department then funds the longest one. Door two costs the longest course before hire and the department then funds the academy.
The exam is before either
No certification is needed to sit Denton's civil service entrance exam; certification is needed to be hired when your name comes up. Section 143.025(h) keeps an eligibility list in effect for six to twelve months, so a candidate can sit the exam while still in school and finish the credential before the list is exhausted. Whether that works depends on rank: background packets go to the highest scores first. The order of the steps is in the hiring process.
The clock
The age window is 18 through 35 as of the exam date under Section 143.023; the detail and the edge cases are in the age limit and when it is measured. A candidate near the top of the window should weigh the longer door-two road against it.
