EMT or Paramedic: Which Door Into Denton Fire

30-second answer. Denton publishes two ways to be hireable. Door one: Texas Commission on Fire Protection Basic Firefighter certification plus a current EMT-Basic. Door two: a Texas paramedic certification or license on its own. A licensed paramedic hired without fire certification attends fire school after hire. A certified firefighter does not repeat it. Which door is faster depends on what you already hold.

What the city requires, verbatim

From the Fire & Emergency Careers FAQ: "You must be a Basic Firefighter by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) and an Emergency Medical Technician - Basic (EMT-Basic)... or you must be a certified or licensed Paramedic." And: "To be eligible for hire, you must be certified by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP)."

Read together, the two sentences mean a paramedic can be hired first and certified as a firefighter afterward through the department, while a non-paramedic must arrive already holding both the fire certification and EMT-Basic.

Door one: fire certification plus EMT-Basic

This is the path for someone starting from zero who wants the shortest classroom time. TCFP Basic Firefighter certification comes through a commission-approved academy and the state exam; EMT-Basic through a Texas Department of State Health Services approved course and the NREMT cognitive exam. Both are prerequisites to being hired, so both sit before the civil service exam notice in your calendar, not after.

Door two: paramedic license

The longer credential, and the one that changes your standing inside the department. Denton runs advanced life support transport, so paramedics are the medical backbone of every shift. The education record the city publishes states that licensed paramedics hired without fire certification attend fire school after hire; the department carries that schooling rather than the candidate.

Academy first or EMT school first

If you hold neither credential, EMT-Basic is the shorter course and it is required under door one regardless, so it is the sensible first step. Fire academy follows. If you are already an EMT and weighing paramedic school against fire academy, door two means the department, not you, pays for the fire side, at the cost of the longer paramedic program up front.

Either way, the same gate

Both doors lead to the same civil service entrance exam, background investigation and polygraph, and department agility test. The age rule, 18 through 35 on the exam date, does not care which door you used.
