Does Denton Fire Pay You Through Fire Academy While You Work?

30-second answer. Not for an uncertified candidate. Denton hires certified firefighters: to be hired you must already hold TCFP Basic Firefighter plus Texas EMT-Basic, or a Texas paramedic licence, and the NEOGOV Fire Fighter-Recruit application asks for those credentials at the door. The one paid academy is for paramedics hired without fire certification, who go through fire academy after hire on the payroll. Some Texas departments do run paid recruit academies for uncertified trainees, and this site lists them. If Denton is the goal and you have to keep working full-time, the route is an EMT course and a fire academy on a schedule you can hold, the exam as soon as you are 18, and the certifications in hand by the time your name comes up.

What Denton pays for, and when

The city's careers FAQ, read September 8, 2026, answers the cost question after hire: "No, any schooling for certifications that you may need will be covered by the Department." Its eligibility answer sets the door: TCFP Basic Firefighter and DSHS EMT-Basic, or a DSHS paramedic. Asked whether a certified firefighter repeats fire school, the FAQ says no; asked whether a paramedic attends fire academy, it says yes, because all operations personnel must be TCFP-certified. The city's careers pages put the division plainly: you pay for firefighter and EMT school; if you are hired, the department pays for paramedic school.

So there are two paid schools at Denton, and both come after hire: paramedic school for a firefighter and EMT hired under door one, and fire academy for a paramedic hired under door two. The department's 2025 summary shows the first in motion: seven EMTs started paramedic school in December 2025. Neither is a way in for someone holding no certification.

Departments that do hire uncertified trainees

Several Texas cities hire recruits with no certification and pay them through an academy. Fort Worth is the closest large example: it hires uncertified trainees and pays a trainee rate during the training year, with the firefighter rate on academy graduation, as its own FY2026 schedule prints; the Denton pay comparison sets the two side by side. Windows open and close; the rule that a city hires uncertified is durable, the dates are not.

Working full-time while you certify

Two things make the Denton route workable for someone who cannot stop working.

First, EMT-Basic is the shorter course and it is required under door one regardless, so it is the sensible first step; the order guide explains why. Second, fire academies are not all daytime programs. The academies near Denton guide lists the college academies within a short drive with the tuition each publishes. Elsewhere in Texas, this site's academy records include an evening track at Austin Community College, day and night academies at College of the Mainland, and a nine-weekend academy with online academics between sessions at the Central Texas Regional Training Academy. Ask each academy near you for its evening or weekend calendar before you assume the choice is quit or wait.

The exam does not wait for the certifications. Denton lets you sit the entrance exam uncertified and hold a place on the list while you finish; the certifications have to be in hand at hire, and the list runs a year from the test date.
