Changing Careers Into Denton Fire With a Degree and No Fire Background

30-second answer. You can sit the next exam as you are. Denton's entrance exam requires no certification, no fire experience and no particular degree. The bars are age, 18 through 35 on exam day; a high school diploma or GED; and a grade of at least 70 on a general-aptitude test. What the degree does not do is count: no exam points attach to it, and the hire rule is certification-based. So the order for a graduate in an office job is fixed. Get on the list for the date. Start EMT-Basic now, because both doors to hire require it or better. Choose between fire academy and paramedic school by which door you want. Train for the physical ability test against the department's published limits. And read the calendar so the certifications land before your name comes up.

What you already have

• The education box. The city asks for a high school diploma or GED and a Texas driver's licence. A bachelor's degree satisfies the first and earns nothing extra on the exam; the education guide covers what counts and what does not.
• The age window. At least 18 and not yet 36 on exam day, under Section 143.023. A graduate in their twenties has a decade of window; the age guide covers how the clock is read.
• Eligibility to test. Nothing else is required to sit the exam. Certification is required at hire, not at the door.

What you do not have yet, in the order to get it

1. The notice. The city's Waiting List is its channel, and the recruiting list on this site's Denton page sends the same date the day it posts.
2. EMT-Basic. It is the shorter of the two courses and door one requires it regardless, so it is the first enrolment whatever else you decide. The academies guide lists the college programs within a short drive and the tuition each publishes.
3. The door. Door one is TCFP Basic Firefighter plus EMT-Basic, both earned before hire. Door two is a paramedic licence on its own, with fire academy after hire and the department covering it. The order guide sets out the trade, and the paid-academy question covers the version where you cannot stop working.
4. The exam. General aptitude, not fire knowledge. The city's FAQ points to the vendor's guide; the free practice set shows the skill areas; the exam-date question has the calendar pattern.
5. The physical ability test. Six events under load, with the limits the department publishes: a timed stair climb in a 50-pound vest with shoulder weights, a short rest, then five events on one clock. The PAT guide has each event and the training that meets it. Start now; the test comes months after the exam, and the months are the point.
6. The packet. After the exam, candidates above the cut complete a Personal History Statement with a birth certificate, diploma or transcripts, driver's licence, college transcripts and certificates attached, on a short deadline. The PHS guide covers it; gather the documents now.

The calendar, honestly

The last two cycles ran the same way: notice in the fall, registration closing in late December, exam on a January Saturday. Certifications have to be in hand at hire, not at the exam, and the eligibility list lasts a year from the test date. For the January 2026 cycle the department's own page placed the physical ability test on February 28, the interviews in March, and the conditional job offer, by which certifications must be verifiable on the state lookups, after that, with an estimated hire date in May. A candidate who tests in January without certification is therefore racing the spring for EMT-Basic and, under door one, the fire academy as well. That is why the EMT enrolment comes before the exam notice, not after it.

What the degree is worth later

Two things, both after hire. The city's exam notice lists incentive pay for education alongside certification pay, and the certification and specialty pay guide has the lines from the agreement. And the department's own education guide points hired firefighters to Texas Education Code Section 54.353, the tuition exemption for fire science coursework at public colleges and universities, for anyone who wants the next degree without the next loan.
