The Denton Fire Personal History Statement: What It Asks For and How to Get It Right
30-second answer. After the written exam, candidates above the cut receive the department's hiring instructions. For the January 2026 cycle the public instructions page was addressed to scores of 85 and above. It sets two immediate steps: submit the Fire Fighter-Recruit application on the city's NEOGOV site, and complete the Personal History Statement on the city's online form by a strict deadline, January 23, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. last cycle, with earliest submissions used as tiebreakers. Five documents attach or the candidate is disqualified: birth certificate; high school diploma or GED, with transcripts acceptable; driver's licence; college transcripts if any; and professional certificates such as TCFP and DSHS. Every question gets an answer, signatures need no notary, and any discrepancy among the NEOGOV application, the PHS and the polygraph may be treated as deception.
When it happens
The order on the department's page: application, then PHS, then the polygraph examination scheduled after the PHS is reviewed, then an optional practice session for the physical ability test, the test itself, the interviews, the conditional job offer, the psychological and medical evaluations, and hire. Last cycle's dates were a January 23 PHS deadline, a January 31 practice session, a February 28 test and March interviews. The page names an estimated hire date in May.
What to attach
- Birth certificate.
- High school diploma or GED. Transcripts are acceptable if you cannot find the diploma.
- Driver's licence.
- College transcripts, if applicable.
- Professional certificates: Texas Commission on Fire Protection, Department of State Health Services, and any others.
The page's warning is unconditional: failure to provide these documents will result in disqualification. Order the transcripts and locate the birth certificate before the exam, not after the instructions arrive; a two-week window is short for a records office.
How to fill it
The department's own tips, from the page: use Chrome, because the form does not support Safari; save as a draft often; use "N/A" only when a question truly does not apply, never to avoid finding an answer; where a section is blank because you are waiting on a return call, say so in the box provided; leave no question unanswered; signatures do not need to be notarized. If the form will not load, send the recruiter a screenshot of the error at once rather than waiting.
The integrity rule
"Any discrepancies between your NEOGOV application, PHS, and Polygraph may be determined as deception and cause for disqualification." That sentence is the reason to build the PHS from records rather than memory. Dates of employment, addresses, citations, the reasons you left each job: pull them from documents, then answer the same way on the application, on the statement and in the polygraph room. A forgotten speeding ticket is rarely a bar. A ticket that appears in the polygraph and not on the statement is the bar.
What comes after
The background investigation uses the statement as its map, and under the city's Meet and Confer agreement failing background ends the process. Passing it opens the physical ability test, and, if you want one, a ride-along. The disqualifiers guide collects every published bar in one place, and the oral board guide covers what the interviews score.
