The Denton Fire Ride-Along Program: Who Qualifies and How It Works

30-second answer. Denton Fire runs a ride-along program for people already in motion toward the job, not for the curious public. The department's recruiting newsletter of October 20, 2025 sets the terms: at least 18, in good health, and one of three things. An active applicant who has submitted a Personal History Statement and passed the background investigation. A student enrolled in a fire academy, EMT or paramedic program that partners with the department. Or a member of the department's Fire Explorer post or its Citizens Fire Academy. Requests go through the Operations Assistant Chief's office with about a week's notice, after a short HIPAA course, a nondisclosure agreement and a liability waiver. You observe. You do not touch equipment.

The three doors

• Active applicant. You have submitted the Personal History Statement and passed background. That places the ride-along after the exam and the packet, not before them; the PHS guide covers when that is.
• Fire or EMS student. You are enrolled in a fire academy, EMT or paramedic program that partners with the department. The newsletter does not list the partner programs; ask your program's coordinator whether it holds a ride-along agreement with Denton Fire. For a college student without certification, this is the door: the EMT-Basic course you need anyway can be the one that puts you on an engine for a day.
• Community partner. You are a member of Fire Explorer Post 1291 or the Citizens Fire Academy. The department's 2025 summary says the same of Explorers. The Explorer guide covers ages 14 to 19.

The process

1. Submit a request. The Emergency Services and Operations Assistant Chief's office reviews and schedules every ride-along, and the newsletter asks for at least a week's notice.
2. Complete a brief HIPAA training course and sign a nondisclosure agreement, because you will be present for patient care.
3. Sign a waiver of claims and release of liability.
4. Once approved, you are scheduled and the battalion chief for that shift is notified. Arrive on time and dressed professionally.

The rules

Collared shirt, slacks and closed-toe shoes; no t-shirts, shorts, sandals or ripped jeans. No weapon of any kind, as Texas Penal Code Section 46.01 defines one. Follow the lawful direction of any department member. Observe only: you do not handle equipment or take part in an incident. You do not enter a private residence without the resident's consent, and patient confidentiality is mandatory.

What it is for

The newsletter calls the ride-along the best way to confirm your calling, and that is the honest use of it: a real shift, medical calls first by volume, the meals and the checks and the long quiet between tones, so that you know what you are signing up for before you spend a year on certifications. No points attach to a ride-along under the city's Meet and Confer agreement; the extra points are for military service, Denton residency and the Denton ISD program. What the day gives you is something to speak from at the oral board, which is where the department decides the order of hire.
