Can I Send Denton Fire My Résumé?

30-second answer. You can, but it will not do anything. Denton hires firefighters under Chapter 143 of the Texas Local Government Code, and under that chapter a beginning position is filled from a ranked list built by a written entrance exam. There is no résumé screen, no interview you can request, and no inbox that moves a name up the list. Your exam grade is your application. What you can do before the notice posts is get on the list for the date, line up the certifications that make you hireable, and take every extra point the agreement allows.

How the door actually opens

The order is fixed and it is public.

1. The written exam. The city's Meet and Confer agreement with the firefighters' association sets the passing grade at seventy out of 100 and says the exam grade plus any military points "will determine the ranking for a Commission List from which applicants proceed through the remainder of the hiring process."
2. Background packets by rank. The careers FAQ: "Background packets will be given out at the test as a link to fill out an online form to the highest scores that will allow us to get enough qualified applicants to progress to the next step." Position on the list, not a passing mark, decides whether you get one.
3. Physical ability test, top thirty. Under the agreement, from the applicants who pass the background check, the department head identifies up to thirty with the highest ranking on the Commission List to take the physical ability test. If fewer than three pass both, the next fifteen are called.
4. Oral interview board, then the eligibility list. The agreement provides for an oral interview board and a chief's interview before the eligibility list is set, and appointments come from that list in rank order under Section 143.026, which the veterans' preference guide explains.

The funnel is narrow. The department's own 2025 summary reports that 212 people took its 2024 exam and that it hired eight rookies in 2025. A résumé does not change those numbers. Rank does.

What to do instead

• Get the date the day it posts. The city's Waiting List is its notice channel, and the recruiting list on this site's Denton page sends the same notice with the reading path for the weeks between.
• Be hireable when your name comes up. To be hired you need TCFP Basic Firefighter plus DSHS EMT-Basic, or a DSHS paramedic. Out-of-state and National Registry certifications convert through state reciprocity, which takes months, not days.
• Take every point. Five for military service with at least 180 days of active duty and an honorable discharge; one for a Denton resident; one for a graduate of the Denton ISD high school fire or EMT program who holds the matching certification. The DD-214 went in with the NEOGOV application before the last exam, and the department's extra-points submission page collects the proof.
• Train for the test that is actually scored. The entrance exam is general aptitude. The free practice set shows the skill areas, and the study-guide question has its own answer.
• Apply after you test. The last cycle's NEOGOV bulletin required applicants to have registered for and taken the exam before submitting the Fire Fighter-Recruit application. Its supplemental questions asked about education, current First Aid and CPR or the ability to get it within 30 days, and working at heights and in confined spaces.
