Denton Fire Department Requirements 2026: Age, Education, Certification
30-second answer. Denton hires through the Texas civil service process, so the age window is 18 through 35 on the date of the entrance exam. You need a high school diploma or GED and a valid Texas driver's license. To be hired you must already hold either Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) Basic Firefighter certification plus EMT-Basic, or a Texas paramedic certification or license. The physical test is the department's own agility test, not the CPAT, and it comes after the background investigation and polygraph.

The certification row is the one that decides your timeline. The city's careers FAQ states it directly: "To be eligible for hire, you must be certified by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP)", and "You must be a Basic Firefighter by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) and an Emergency Medical Technician - Basic (EMT-Basic)... or you must be a certified or licensed Paramedic."
Read that as two doors. Door one is fire certification plus EMT-Basic. Door two is a paramedic license on its own. A licensed paramedic hired without fire certification attends fire school after hire; a certified firefighter does not repeat it.
What the physical test is and is not
Denton does not use the IAFF/IAFC Candidate Physical Ability Test. The department runs its own entry-level physical agility test, and the careers FAQ places it after the background and polygraph steps rather than before the exam. Do not plan around a CPAT card. Plan around being fit enough to pass an agility test whose exact events the city publishes with each hiring notice.
The exam that opens the door
The civil service entrance exam comes first. The careers page states that study guides are available on the Fire and Police Selection, Inc. website, which names the test vendor. The last exam was Saturday, January 10, 2026 (NEOGOV Fire Fighter-Recruit bulletin, job 26-0000000306). As of September 8, 2026 the next date is not posted; the careers FAQ still carries its pre-exam line that the next exam "will take place in 2026 at a time and place which has yet to be determined." The city's Waiting List is the notice channel for the date.
