Residency: Do You Have to Live in Denton to Be a Denton Firefighter?

30-second answer. No published rule says so. Neither the City of Denton's Fire Department Careers page nor its Fire & Emergency Careers FAQ, both read September 7, 2026, lists a residency requirement, and the eligibility standard the department publishes is age, education, a Texas driver's license, and certification. What the city does do is score residency: its 2025 civil service exam final-scores list carries a one-point Resident adjustment column beside the five-point Military column the statute requires. Living in Denton is a point on the exam, not a condition of hire.

What the city publishes about eligibility

The published standard is short: 18 through 35 on the exam date under Chapter 143, a high school diploma or GED, a valid Texas driver's license with an acceptable record, and, to be hired, TCFP Basic Firefighter certification plus EMT-Basic or a Texas paramedic certification or license. Residency is not on that list.

What the exam scoring shows

The city's 2025 DFD Commission List, the final-scores document for the Saturday, January 11, 2025 civil service examination, is published on the city's site. Its columns are a raw score, a Military column carrying the five statutory points, a Resident column carrying one point, and a final score. That structure is the only place residency appears in the department's published hiring material, and it appears as a scoring adjustment.

Two things follow. First, a resident point is worth having: appointment under Section 143.026 starts with the highest grade on the list and can reach only as far as the third-highest, so one point moves a candidate past everyone tied at the raw score below. Second, it is not a gate. A non-resident with a higher raw score outranks a resident with a lower one.

How it compares

Philadelphia requires bona fide residence in the city for one year prior to appointment. Some Texas cities publish a residency or response-time rule for firefighters after hire. Denton publishes neither on its careers pages as of this read. If the next exam notice changes that, the notice governs, which is one more reason the city's Waiting List is the right subscription.
