How to Read a Denton Fire Exam Notice, Line by Line

30-second answer. Every Denton entrance exam starts with a Notice of Civil Service Examination, a two-page position opportunity announcement that names the registration deadline, the test date, time and site, what the position offers, the minimum qualifications, the conditions of employment, the test-day rules and how the list is built. The next one is not posted yet; the last two, for the January 11, 2025 exam and the January 10, 2026 exam, were built the same way, and the rules inside them come from Chapter 143, the city's Local Rules and the Meet and Confer Agreement, none of which change between cycles. This guide walks the January 2025 notice section by section so that when the next one posts, you read it in five minutes and know exactly what to do first.

Line one: the registration deadline

The notice leads with the deadline, not the test date. For the January 11, 2025 exam it was December 29, 2024, thirteen days before the test. Registration is online only, through the department's recruiting site and the city's applicant system, and only applicants who complete the registration before the deadline may sit. If you are on the recruiting list, the notice reaches you the day it posts; the deadline is the first thing to put in your calendar.

The purpose paragraph: what list you are testing onto

The notice states that the city will conduct the exam under Chapter 143 of the Local Government Code, the City of Denton Local Rules and the Meet and Confer Agreement, to establish an eligibility list for the position of Fire Recruit, and that the eligibility period begins on the test date and remains in effect for one year or until the list is exhausted. That one sentence carries three facts candidates miss: the list is a year long, it can be used up before the year ends, and the test date, not your hire date, starts the clock.

Date, time and place

The 2025 notice set the exam for a Saturday at 10:00 a.m. with no admittance after 10:00, at a movie theater on West University Drive in Denton; the 2026 exam was also a Saturday at 10:00 a.m. Expect a Saturday morning in January, in Denton, with a hard door.

Salary and incentive lines

The notice prints the starting salary and the top of the base range with step raises, and notes that firefighters are eligible for incentive pay for education, TCFP certifications and EMS certification. The figures change with each year's pay plan; the current ones are on the salary guide and the specialty pay guide, both from the city's own documents.

Minimum qualifications: the two doors

Under training and experience the notice requires a high school diploma or GED, compliance with state civil service requirements, and one of two certification options held on the date of hire: a TCFP basic structural fire protection personnel certification plus a DSHS EMT-Basic, or a DSHS paramedic certification. Conditions of employment: the list that disqualifies

The 2025 notice's conditions, in order: no younger than 18; not yet 36 on the exam date; able to read, write and speak English; no felony convictions and no misdemeanor record that would indicate a habitual law violator; a valid Class B Texas driver's licence within one year or an approved state equivalent; a passed medical examination indicating fitness for duty; normal color vision and vision in both eyes correctable to 20/20; a passed criminal history check and drug screen before employment; a passed polygraph; and a passed physical ability test and psychological test. How to register, and what the test day requires

The notice's second page covers registration and test information. Applicants present valid photo identification to enter the test room, and anyone who has reached their 36th birthday on the exam date is not admitted. Personal items, including watches, calculators, phones, food and drink, are not allowed in the room. Applicants who score a passing grade receive five bonus points by uploading a DD-214 showing at least 180 days of active duty and an honorable discharge with the application before the exam; the veterans' guide covers the paperwork. Accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act are available on request to the civil service director by the registration deadline, with a current letter from a licensed professional describing the limitation and the accommodation needed.

How the list is built

Applicants scoring 70 or above are placed on the commission list, subject to tie-breakers. The agreement adds the points the notice does not print: five for qualifying military service, one for completing the Denton ISD high school fire program with TCFP certification or the Denton ISD high school EMT program with DSHS certification, and one for residing in the City of Denton. The written grade plus those points ranks the commission list; from that list the chief calls candidates by rank into background, the physical ability test, the oral board and the chief's interview, and the final eligibility list is built from the interview scores, not the written grade. 1. Put the registration deadline, not the test date, at the top of the page.
2. Register online the same day; the system closes at the deadline.
3. If you served, upload the DD-214 with the application, before the exam.
4. Read the conditions of employment against your own record and licence; the Class B licence is a one-year post-hire requirement, the age and vision lines are not.
