EMT to Paramedic 2026: $44,470 to $60,600

There are three national rungs: EMT, Advanced EMT, and paramedic. Texas adds Licensed Paramedic on top of the paramedic program. This page is the ladder: clocks, exam fees, and BLS wages already sourced on how to become an EMT or paramedic. It is not a second how-to.

AEMT has no separate BLS wage. Texas Licensed Paramedic needs the accredited program plus a degree.

The Four Rungs

You cannot skip EMT. Every paramedic started there. Scope at each national level, without the wage row, is on EMT vs AEMT vs paramedic certification levels.

What Each Clock Is

EMT. A state-approved course, then the NREMT cognitive exam, then a state license. Most people are working EMTs in four to six months. In Texas, apply to DSHS with your National Registry number. Texas EMT how-to: how to become an EMT in Texas.

AEMT. IV and IO access, supraglottic airways, and an expanded medication list, typically one additional semester while you work as an EMT. Texas certifies the level. Not every state deploys it. This page does not print a job-board AEMT salary.

Paramedic. Since January 1, 2013 the National Registry requires a CAAHEP-accredited program (or a CoAEMSP Letter of Review). Typical path is two to three years from zero: EMT, often 6 to 12 months of field time, then the 12- to 24-month program. Texas how-to: how to become a paramedic in Texas.

Texas Licensed Paramedic. EMT-Paramedic is the credential at program completion. Licensed Paramedic needs that program plus a two-year EMS associate degree or a four-year degree in any field, per the same DSHS certification page.

Recertification is the National Continued Competency Program: 40 hours for EMTs, 50 for AEMTs, and 60 for paramedics per two-year cycle, per the NREMT recertification guide.

What Is Not On This Ladder

• May 2024 medians as current pay. The BLS projections-cycle wage column is not current pay. Current wages are the May 2025 OEWS row in the table.
• A percent "ROI" between two national medians. Do not treat two survey medians as a personal raise.
• A job-board AEMT band. Glassdoor, Salary.com, and ZipRecruiter averages stay off this page. BLS does not report AEMT.
