Will AI Replace Firefighters? What the Research Says

Oxford scored firefighting at a 17 percent automation probability and paramedic work at 4.9. Microsoft's 2025 study of 200,000 real AI conversations agrees. The evidence, the pay math, and the cost of entry.

The short answer. No credible research shows AI replacing firefighters or paramedics. Oxford's landmark automation study scored firefighting at a 17 percent probability of computerization and EMT/paramedic work at 4.9 percent, against 47 percent of all US employment it rated high-risk. A 2025 Microsoft study of 200,000 real AI conversations found fire service supervision among the 25 occupations, out of roughly 900, that AI touched least. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects the field growing through 2035.

For twenty years the career advice never changed. Go to college, borrow what it takes, get a job at a desk. The desk was the safe part. The fire truck was the risk.

Then software learned to do desk work. The people who took the safe advice are watching AI write code, summarize case law, and draft marketing copy, and the people weighing a fire service career are asking a fair question: is this job next?

The research says no, and it says it from two directions. This article walks through both studies, the government projections, what the work pays against degree careers, and what it costs to enter. Every number has a source named beside it. Check them yourself.

What the automation research says

Two research teams, working twelve years apart with different methods, measured different things. Both put fire and EMS work at the bottom of their exposure lists.

The Oxford study. In 2013, Carl Frey and Michael Osborne at Oxford ranked 702 occupations by the probability that computerization could take them over, in the paper that produced the widely quoted finding that 47 percent of US employment sat in the high-risk category. Their appendix scores, occupation by occupation:

  • Telemarketers, the study's most automatable job: 99 percent
  • Firefighters: 17 percent
  • EMTs and paramedics: 4.9 percent
  • First-line supervisors of firefighting workers: 0.36 percent, the 10th most automation-resistant job of all 702

The Microsoft study. In 2025, Microsoft researchers took the opposite approach. Instead of forecasting, they analyzed 200,000 real conversations between workers and an AI assistant and scored roughly 900 occupations by how much of each one's work the technology already performs. Knowledge work filled the top of the list: writing, analysis, sales, customer service. Among the 25 occupations AI touched least sat supervisors of firefighters, alongside surgical assistants, orderlies, medical equipment preparers, and massage therapists. Nearly every job on that end of the list is work done with trained hands on a human body.

One study measured the probability that machines take the job. The other measured how much of the work machines already do. A firefighter reading both should notice they agree.

Why the work resists automation

AI is software. It is very good at anything that happens on a screen: text, numbers, images, code. A structure fire happens in the one place a screen cannot reach. A building nobody has mapped, filled with smoke nobody can see through, holding a person whose location nobody knows. Every fire is a new problem in a new layout under new conditions, and the answers are found by touch, by sound, and by judgment built over thousands of hours.

McKinsey's researchers put numbers on this divide: physical work in predictable environments, like an assembly line, is 78 percent automatable with demonstrated technology. Physical work in unpredictable environments is 25 percent, and their list of examples names providing medical care as a first responder.

The medical half of the job is the larger half almost everywhere. NFPA's fire experience survey counted 28.2 million medical-aid calls among 42.7 million total US fire department calls in 2024, about two thirds, against roughly 3 percent for fires. In the many departments that run fire and EMS together, the firefighter who pulls the hose line is the same person who starts the IV in a moving ambulance and works a patient who cannot say what is wrong. That is two of the least automatable jobs in the economy carried by one person on one shift.

The field is growing, not shrinking

The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects firefighter employment growing 4 percent from 2025 to 2035, about as fast as the average occupation, with about 26,800 openings a year nationwide. EMT and paramedic employment is projected to grow 6 percent over the same window, faster than average. BLS's own occupation page adds a line worth reading twice: most calls to firefighters are for medical emergencies, not fires.

What the job pays against degree careers

The national median wage for firefighters was $59,280 in May 2025 (BLS OEWS). Medians blend every experience level and every market, and the spread around that number is wide: big-city and suburban departments in strong markets commonly start certified firefighters in the $70,000s and $80,000s. The Texas firefighter salary tables on this site track certified starting pay department by department from each city's own published pay plan, and the top of that market starts near six figures.

Now the degree side, from the National Association of Colleges and Employers' projections for the Class of 2025: engineering graduates at $78,731, computer science at $76,251, business at $65,276, and about $68,680 across all majors. The NEA's benchmark puts the average starting teacher at $48,112. Every one of those careers requires a four-year degree. Most firefighter careers require a high school diploma or GED, state fire certification, and EMT certification, with many departments hiring at EMT level and sending firefighters on to paramedic school.

A certified starting salary in the $70,000s or $80,000s does not just compete with those graduate paychecks. It arrives four years sooner, with the difference below.

What it costs to get in

Forty-seven percent of bachelor's graduates from public and private nonprofit four-year schools leave with student debt, owing an average of $29,560 (College Board, Trends in College Pricing and Student Aid 2025). Americans carry $1.86 trillion in student loans (Federal Reserve G.19, 2026). The standard federal repayment plan runs ten years; researchers who track actual repayment put the typical stretch at seventeen to twenty.

The College Board's same report prices the other path: the average full-time budget at a public four-year school, tuition, fees, housing, and food together, is $30,990 a year for in-state students in 2025-26. Four years at that rate is $123,960 before annual increases and before interest on anything borrowed.

A fire academy is priced differently. In Texas, Kilgore College's academy publishes $2,559 for a Texas resident, and TEEX in College Station charges $5,850 tuition, a $75 application fee, and $1,661 to $1,909 in required supplies, which makes $7,834 the most expensive fully published path in our academy directory. An EMT course comes on top, priced by the community college that runs it. Months of training, not years, at cents on the degree's dollar, for a career the research above says machines reach last.

Where AI actually fits in the fire service

None of this means the fire service ignores technology, and none of it is a guarantee. McKinsey's researchers note their 25 percent figure could rise as machines improve. What the evidence shows is the order of events: AI is reaching desk work first and hands-on emergency work last, by a wide margin. Inside the fire service it arrives as help, better call triage and better information on the way to the scene, because at the end of the call there is still a door to force and a patient who needs a person to come get them.
