What the ASVAB Tests: AFQT Score Explained (2026)

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery is one exam that does two jobs. Four of its tests decide whether you can enlist at all. All of its tests feed the composite scores that decide which jobs a recruiter can offer you (officialasvab.com, FAQs, retrieved 2026-08-22). It is not an IQ test, and it is not a second exam called "the AFQT."

The AFQT is a score computed from four ASVAB subtests. That is the whole trick.

30-second answer. Ten tests. AFQT uses Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, Arithmetic Reasoning, and Mathematics Knowledge. The AFQT is a percentile from 1 to 99 against a 1997 sample of 18-to-23-year-olds, not the percent of questions you got right. The ten tests

The official program lists ten tests, in four domains, in this order (officialasvab.com, ASVAB Subtests, retrieved 2026-08-22):

On the computer version, Auto Information and Shop Information are separate tests. On paper they are one combined Auto and Shop (AS) subtest. Combined AS scores are reported for both formats (same subtests page).

The high-school Career Exploration Program uses the same contents except Assembling Objects, which is given in the Enlistment Testing Program and not in the student program (officialasvab.com FAQs, retrieved 2026-08-22). A junior-year school ASVAB is not automatically the enlistment battery.

How the AFQT is calculated

There is one exam. AFQT is not a second sitting. Four tests are combined: Word Knowledge (WK), Paragraph Comprehension (PC), Arithmetic Reasoning (AR), and Mathematics Knowledge (MK) (officialasvab.com FAQs and Understanding ASVAB Scores, retrieved 2026-08-22).

The official scores page computes AFQT from those four Standard Scores. It does not print a "verbal expression counts double" formula. This page does not invent one.

AFQT is a percentile from 1 to 99. A 50 means you scored as well as or better than 50 percent of a nationally representative sample of 18-to-23-year-olds who took the ASVAB in a 1997 norming study. It is not "you got half the questions right" (same scores page and FAQs).

The other tests do not enter the AFQT. They do enter the Service composite scores used for job assignment (FAQs: "Scores on all of the ASVAB tests are used to determine the best job for you in the military"). This page does not print MOS, AFSC, or rating line-score targets. Those strings change by Service and by year, and they are not on officialasvab.com.

What the official categories mean

Applicants in category IIIA or higher may qualify for enlistment incentives (same page). Category V is ineligible to enlist (32 CFR 66.6(b)(4)(i), eCFR, retrieved 2026-08-22).

The minimum AFQT required to qualify "varies across the different branches of service. Contact a military recruiter or visit one of the Service-specific websites" (Enlistment Eligibility). This page does not print a branch-by-branch 31/35/40 table. Those numbers are not on officialasvab.com.

Where you take it, and how it adapts

Most testing is at a Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) by computer. If you do not live near a MEPS, you may test at a Military Entrance Test (MET) site, usually paper and pencil. Scores should be very similar either way (officialasvab.com, ASVAB Fact Sheet, retrieved 2026-08-22).

On paper, every examinee gets the same items. On CAT-ASVAB, the next item is chosen from a pool that ranges from very easy to very hard: typically an easier item after an incorrect answer, a harder item after a correct one (officialasvab.com, The CAT-ASVAB, retrieved 2026-08-22). Time limits are published on that page. The official program does not say you cannot go back, so this page does not either.

You cannot use a calculator. The FAQs say math without a calculator is what the test assesses.

Retest clock

After the first ASVAB you wait one calendar month to retake. You wait one more calendar month for a second retest. After that you wait six calendar months. Scores may be used for enlistment for up to two years from the test date (officialasvab.com FAQs and Recruiter Retest Policy, retrieved 2026-08-22).

If the long-term door is Texas public safety

The ASVAB is the enlistment door, not a Texas peace officer exam and not a civil-service exam. TCOLE's licensing floor is in TCOLE peace officer license requirements: age 21, or 18 with an associate's degree, 60 semester hours, or an honorable discharge after two years of active service; Class A is a lifetime bar; Class B is a ten-year lookback; family violence includes community supervision; there is no TCOLE driver's-license requirement (37 TAC 217.1). Chapter 143 cities add five veteran points after a passing civil-service score (Tex. Loc. Gov't Code 143.025).
