Texas Chapter 143 firefighter entrance exams are open, competitive, and free. The written grade is on a 100-point scale. Seventy percent is the statutory minimum. Vacancies are filled from the three highest grades on the live list. Five veteran points are added only after a passing grade (Tex. Loc. Gov't Code §§143.025 and 143.026, official capitol text retrieved 2026-08-18). The exam tests general aptitude. It is not the TCFP structure-fire exam. Start with the current city notice: that notice names the vendor and the study booklet. Denton is a Chapter 143 fire department. The city's Fire and Emergency Careers FAQ, retrieved 2026-08-18, says the next Fire Civil Service Exam is in 2026 at a time and place not yet posted, and it points applicants to the FPSI CEB Candidate Orientation Guide (https://www.fpsi.com/product/ceb-candidate-orientation-guide/). Buy that booklet, not FireTEAM and not a generic firefighter exam book, unless a later official notice names a different instrument. Entrance scores are good for one year. The physical agility test comes after background and polygraph, not on written-exam day (same FAQ).
