Garland Firefighter Hiring 2026: Apply Sep 4

Today is the first day of the posted window. Firefighter Career Opportunities prints: the next entrance exam is October 5, 2026. Applications open Friday, September 4 and close Friday, September 25. You must apply in that three-week window to sit the exam. Time and location come after you apply. That page links the Workday board.

Workday on 2026-09-04 listed 0 firefighter jobs and printed There are no job openings at this time. Recruit and cadet searches were also 0. The unfiltered board listed 52 city jobs, none a firefighter posting. The careers page says the window opened September 4; Workday has no firefighter posting to apply on. What You Need Before You Apply

Garland hires uncertified recruits. The Fire Employment FAQ: you must have a high school diploma or GED to be hired. If hired, you attend paramedic school and the Garland Fire Academy. You must become certified as a condition of employment. All recruits complete the Garland Fire Academy, including people who already hold a fire card. Out-of-state fire certification can transfer through TCFP; you still go through the academy.

Ranking is by civil service test score. EMT or paramedic cards do not get preference. Certifications are tie-breakers. A degree is not required at hire. U.S. citizenship is not required. Applications are online only, and only during the posted window. Garland does not use volunteers.

Age min and max are unpublished on the FAQ, careers page, and PAT sheet. Collin College is a nearby program, not a required first step. A TCFP card is not the apply rule for this recruit door.

Also from the FAQ: each metroplex city runs its own civil service test. Study material is posted when an exam is scheduled. The posted study guide is Fire & Police Selection, Inc. CEB-PST (2nd Ed.), 2023: reading, mathematical reasoning, map reading, writing, human relations, and practical/reasoning skills.

Does Garland Use CPAT?

No. The Physical Agility Test is a department PAT. Fail any one event and you are out. Late to your assigned time and you are out. The Fire Department schedules it. Allow 5 to 10 minutes to warm up.

  1. Mile run in 14:15. Rest 5 minutes.
  2. Ladder climb. 65 ft ladder at 70 degrees, touch the top rung, climb down. 2:31. Rest 3 minutes.
  3. Hose lift. 1-inch rope, 50 ft of rolled 2 1/2-inch hose, 33 ft vertical, no stopping. 0:36. Rest 3 minutes.
  4. Charged hose advance. 50 ft of charged 2 1/2-inch hose (100 ft hose with nozzle used). 0:49. Rest 3 minutes.
  5. Equipment carry. 50 ft empty 2 1/2-inch hose with nozzle, up and back down 54 stair steps. 1:29. Rest 3 minutes.
  6. Ladder removal and replacement. 24 ft extension ladder, 75 lb, from a 6 ft 3 in rack to the ground and back. 0:20. Rest 3 minutes.
  7. Body carry. Run 75 ft, drag or carry a 168 lb dummy 75 ft back. 0:55. Rest 3 minutes.
  8. Hose loading. Ten rolled empty 2 1/2-inch sections onto a 5 ft platform. 1:09. Test complete.

A CPAT card does not skip that PAT. Event specs for the standard eight-event CPAT: CPAT vs firefighter physical ability tests.

On-site practice this cycle (8:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m., and 1:30 p.m.): September 15 and 16. Register. Information sessions ran August 24 through 27; those dates have passed.

How Long Is the Academy?

Unpublished as a week count. Recruits attend the Garland Fire Academy. If hired without cards, you also attend paramedic school. Shift on the PAT sheet: 24 hours on, 48 hours off, or a 40-hour week 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Stations, headcount, and pension

Station count, sworn headcount, and founding year are unpublished on the careers, FAQ, recruitment, and PAT pages. Fire Station Information is a facility search, not a printed roster on 2026-09-03.

What To Do During This Window

Watch Workday until a firefighter posting appears, then apply. The careers page says the window is September 4 through 25, 2026. Sit October 5, 2026. Pull the study guide.
