Abilene Firefighter Hiring 2026: Recruits + Laterals

5 min readUpdated 2026-08-22

The Employment page says The 2025 application period has closed. Check back for a new hiring process. Recruits and laterals use that page.

Apply on Dayforce (cityofabilene CANDIDATEPORTAL), not governmentjobs.com/careers/abilenetx. That slug dumps to the generic NEOGOV home. Employment still links a live Dayforce card for Airport Operations Officers (job 8054). That is not the municipal firefighter recruit card.

Department listing: Abilene Fire Department. Official hub: Fire Department. Alias abilenetx.gov/fire is 200. Do not use /city-hall/departments/fire. That path 404s. Admin 250 Grape Street. Fire Marshal physical 2201 South 19th, 325-676-6483. Texas order of operations: how to become a firefighter in Texas. TCFP explained: what is TCFP certification. EMT path: how to become an EMT in Texas.

What You Need Before You Apply

Two doors on Employment. Read the one that matches you.

Probationary Firefighter / Recruit (Certified & Non-Certified)

  • No Experience Required.
  • 18-35 years of age by the start date.
  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Good moral character. Good driving record. Drug, medical, and psychological exams.
  • Recruits attend an AFD-run state-approved academy and must complete EMT-Basic within the first 6 months. TCFP is not required on day one for this door.
  • Shift advertised 48/96.

Firefighter Lateral

  • Three (3) years paid full-time in a civil service fire department.
  • TCFP Basic Structural and EMT-Basic.
  • Age 18-35 by the start date. High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Laterals skip the civil-service written exam. They still sit the Physical Ability Test, background, psychological exam, oral interview board, and medical / physical / drug screening.

This is not a paramedic-at-hire door. Employment never lists paramedic as a recruit or lateral requirement.

Does Abilene Use CPAT?

No. The physical is the department Candidate Physical Ability Test (PAT). Employment offers two practice sessions for people who already applied, plus PAT videos on the AFD site. Laterals sit the same Physical Ability Test. Do not bring a CPAT card. Event list and time cap are unpublished on the opened pages.

Specs for the standard eight-event CPAT: CPAT vs firefighter physical ability tests.

How Long Is the Academy?

The city has not published a recruit-academy week count. Recruits graduate an AFD-run state-approved school and must hold EMT-Basic inside 6 months. That is not a 12-16 week folklore cadet block. An HTML date Monday, February 5, 2024 is a prior academy start, not a 2026 class.

Cisco College Fire Technology is an in-region school. It is not a required first step while the window is closed.

Stations, headcount, and retirement

The Fire Stations facility list names Fire Station #1 through #9. That is nine. Employment still says 8. Do not use 8.

Headcount: TCFP appointed strength is 211 (FDID 10, rank 27) on departments by size. City labor notes 211 employees as of March 1, 2026. Those two agree. A 175 figure on other pages is stale. Airport ARFF (FDID 9072, 12 appointed) and "Abilene Fire Department - OL" (FDID 459, 8) are other rows. Do not add them to AFD.

Calls: Our History says "over 15,000 calls annually." That is a floor, not a year-stamped total. ALS is in-house. Transport is a third-party provider.

ISO is Class 1. The nationwide-count tag on some reprints is undated. Print Class 1 only. Paid department 1922 (volunteer closed when Chief J.J. Clinton died; the city stood up a full-paid crew). Chief Cande Flores since June 1, 2018. Deputies: Michael Burden (Emergency Services, appointed 2016) and Joey Kincaid (Support Services). Bargaining agent Abilene Professional Fire Fighters Association. The 2023 Meet and Confer expired April 1, 2026. An April 1, 2026 ordinance holds FY 2026 base and specialty pay through September 30, 2026.

Pension for Abilene firefighters is the Firemen's Relief & Retirement Fund. TMRS (7 percent) is "all employees (except firemen)." The contribution percent is agreed by the Firefighter's Pension Board and the City Council and is not printed on Benefits. Do not use TMRS for AFD.

Starting pay is on the city's Firefighter Personnel Step and Grade Salary Schedule. This guide does not print a dollar.

What To Do While the Window Is Closed

Watch Employment. When a municipal recruit card opens, apply on Dayforce cityofabilene. Recruits: no TCFP at hire; train the department PAT and plan on AFD academy plus EMT-B in 6 months. Laterals: keep TCFP Basic Structural and EMT-B current, and hold three years of civil-service time. Do not file on governmentjobs.com/careers/abilenetx. Do not treat Airport Operations Officers job 8054 as the fire card.

Confirm the live Employment page before you apply. Ready to Serve is the candidate tracker for certifications, PAT fitness, and application materials.
