What to Eat Before the CPAT or Denton PAT (2026)

What Should You Eat Before the CPAT?

Do not take a timed physical ability test fasted. Eat a familiar, carbohydrate-heavy meal hours before the start, arrive hydrated, and skip anything you have not already used on a vest day. CPAT is ten minutes twenty seconds of loaded work. Glycogen and fluid are the fuel. Skip a new supplement.

What Does the Test Actually Cost You?

CPAT is eight events in sequence, a 50-pound vest the whole way, an extra 25 pounds on the stair climb, and a 10:20 cap. Fail one event and you fail the test. That is a short, high-output circuit under a vest. Cutting carbohydrate the week before is the wrong plan. Moderate to high intensity work and resistance-based workouts rely extensively upon carbohydrate as a fuel source (Kerksick et al., J Int Soc Sports Nutr. 2017;14:33, DOI 10.1186/s12970-017-0189-4).

The joint ACSM / Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics / Dietitians of Canada position is that performance and recovery are enhanced by well-chosen nutrition strategies ("Nutrition and Athletic Performance," Med Sci Sports Exerc. 2016;48(3):543-568). They send athletes to a registered dietitian.

Denton candidates: same fueling logic, different sheet. Denton runs its own department PAT, not CPAT. Train and eat for the city's events (Denton PAT). What CPAT is: what is the CPAT.

What Should You Eat in the 48 Hours Before?

Keep eating on a regular schedule. ACSM's public sports-nutrition facts warn that infrequent meals fail to meet energy needs in real time, and that the best performance happens when you have enough energy to support the work (Dan Benardot, FACSM, "Ten Things You Need to Know About Sports Nutrition," ACSM.org, December 17, 2024, points 4 and 7). Two days of normal meals with carbohydrate at each sitting beats a single huge dinner the night before.

Protein through the training block: the ISSN position stand for healthy exercising people is 1.4 to 2.0 grams per kilogram per day, with a general feeding of 20 to 40 grams (J Int Soc Sports Nutr, PMID 28642676). Use that range during the weeks you train.

What Should You Eat on Test Morning?

A meal you have already eaten on a heavy stair day, hours before the start, built around carbohydrate you tolerate: oats, rice, bread, fruit, yogurt. The 2016 joint position is the authority for pre-event carbohydrate.

Fluid: start the morning not thirsty. ACSM: poor hydration cuts heart stroke volume and sweat rate and slows nutrient delivery to working cells (ACSM sports-nutrition facts, 2024, point 8). Skip a first-time energy drink.

Nothing that gave you GI trouble on a vest workout.

What Should You Eat After the Test or a Full Simulation?

Plan food and fluid for immediately after. ACSM: recovery is as important as the work, and you should have appropriate food and drink ready as soon as you finish (ACSM sports-nutrition facts, 2024, point 9). Build that habit on full simulation days.

Does Denton PAT Change Any of This?

No on the fueling. Yes on the events. Denton is not CPAT. Confirm the sheet on the city notice, then eat the same way: not fasted, carbohydrate you already trust, hydrated, nothing new. CPAT vs PAT: CPAT vs firefighter physical ability tests.
