Indiana Firefighter Salary 2026 by Department: Sixteen Departments, Their Own Documents

The short answer. There is no single Indiana firefighter salary. Indiana has no statewide firefighter examination and no state pay scale: every city fixes its fire salaries by ordinance each year, every department runs its own hiring process under the 1977 Police and Firefighters' Pension Fund rules, and the figure is wherever the employer prints it. Of the sixteen departments read on September 9, 2026, eleven print an annual starting figure: Indianapolis's $55,841 (first year, 2026 figures), Gary's $56,650 (base salary in the city's April 2026 release), Southwest Allen County's $63,654 (Firefighter/EMT, 2026), Muncie's $64,623.25 (base pay after a first-year step of $56,868.46, 2026 ordinance), Evansville's $70,132 (second year, after a $67,132 probationary year), West Lafayette's $70,282.94 (2025), Columbus's $70,733 (2026 range minimum), Westfield's $73,356.61 (class specification), Fishers's $74,562 (Firefighter/EMT, first year, 2026), Carmel's $74,675 (Year 1 of the 2026 matrix) and Bloomington's $83,503 (Firefighter 1st Class, after a $78,503 probationary year, 2026 ordinance). The printed tops run from Muncie's $67,854.41 (first-class rate in the eleventh year) and Evansville's $75,066 (fifth year) to Indianapolis's $90,569 (third year), Columbus's $95,979.60 (range top) and Carmel's $117,134 (Year 15). Fort Wayne, South Bend, Hammond and Lafayette print no figure, and Noblesville prints bi-weekly maximums only. No dated application window was open on the read date; Indianapolis says its next process opens in 2028, Evansville tests again in 2027 and Lafayette reopens in the spring of 2027. The registry counts 765 Indiana fire departments, 9.5 percent of them career and 3.7 percent mostly career.

This is not a statewide table and it is not an apply-now board. Indiana law makes each city council fix police and fire salaries by ordinance before the year begins, and each department hires through its own merit commission or safety board, with the age rule of the 1977 pension fund (21 to under 40 at appointment) printed on most recruiting pages. So the figure lives in different places from one city to the next: a recruiting page with this year's numbers, a salary ordinance, a pay matrix attached to a benefit package, a class specification on a job board, or a city release about a new labor agreement. This page carries a figure only when the employer's own document prints an annual figure, with the document and the read date, and nothing more. A bi-weekly or hourly rate is never multiplied into a salary the employer did not print. A union's social post, a testing vendor's listing and a news story are not sources here. Where the document is labeled with a year that has ended, or prints a figure with a caveat the employer itself attaches, the row carries it and says so.

What do these documents actually show?

Three column definitions, because most published comparisons blur roles, and the blur is where the misleading numbers come from.

• Recruit / academy is a printed pre-certification annual when the employer prints one. Three Indiana rows do, each labeled probationary by the employer: Evansville $67,132 (1st Year Probationary Firefighter), Bloomington $78,503 (Probationary Officer) and Muncie $56,868.46 (the first-year step, base pay minus 12 percent). Indianapolis prints a first-year figure without that label, so it sits in the starting column.
• Starting (certified) is the first annual figure the document names for the firefighter title: Indianapolis $55,841 (first year), Evansville $70,132 (second year), Carmel $74,675 (Year 1), Fishers $74,562 (Firefighter/EMT first year; Firefighter/Paramedic $80,659), Bloomington $83,503 (Firefighter 1st Class), Gary $56,650 (base salary), West Lafayette $70,282.94 (2025), Muncie $64,623.25 (base pay), Westfield $73,356.61 (class specification), Columbus $70,733 (range minimum), Southwest Allen County $63,654 (Firefighter/EMT; Firefighter/Paramedic $74,263).
• Top firefighter step is the highest printed firefighter-rank annual before promotion: Indianapolis $90,569 (third year), Evansville $75,066 (fifth year), Carmel $117,134 (Year 15, with $500 longevity steps to $122,134 at 25 years), Muncie $67,854.41 (Certified First-Class Fire Fighter in the eleventh year) and Columbus $95,979.60 (the top of a range with no steps printed). Bloomington prints one Firefighter 1st Class rate and no steps; Fishers's third-year $79,826 is not labeled a top and is named.
• Source is the document title, the link, the year where the document prints one, and the date we read it.
• Every annual figure is base pay as the document prints it, with one caution the employer itself attaches: Westfield's 2025 benefits sheet says its firefighter salary includes scheduled overtime. Carmel's $11,713.40 paramedic pay and $2 an hour ambulance pay, Columbus's $3,000 paramedic pay, Muncie's per-shift EMS pay and every city's longevity and clothing allowances sit outside the columns.

Why isn't there a statewide starting salary?

Because Indiana leaves both the hiring and the pay to each city. There is no statewide entrance examination: Indianapolis takes applications about every two years and says its next process opens in 2028, Evansville tests in odd years for a two-year list, Lafayette reopens each spring, Carmel and Fishers keep job interest cards between windows, and Columbus ran a January 2026 window. The pay is fixed locally under Indiana Code 36-8-3-3, so the public document varies: Bloomington and Muncie publish the salary ordinance itself (one rate per rank in Bloomington; a base with a first-year step and longevity in Muncie), Carmel attaches a fifteen-year matrix to its benefit package, Westfield publishes a class specification, Gary announced its base salary in a release about the first labor agreement since 2003, and Noblesville's ordinance prints bi-weekly maximums that this page does not multiply out. Fort Wayne, South Bend, Hammond and Lafayette print the process and no figure, so those rows stay null with each page named. The Texas, Missouri, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Michigan, Tennessee, Virginia, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Georgia, Washington, Arizona, Illinois, Ohio, Florida, Colorado and California clones use the same rule: null is a value, conflicts are named, and bi-weekly and hourly rates are not converted.

The universe is measured but not yet counted. The U.S. Fire Administration's National Fire Department Registry (state totals read September 9, 2026; registry last updated June 11, 2026) lists 765 registered fire departments in Indiana, 9.5 percent of them Career and 3.7 percent Mostly career. The registry prints those shares as percentages, not as a count, so this page does not turn them into a number of career departments. Sixteen departments against it is a kickoff, not a census; the next documents to open are the 2026 salary ordinances of Fort Wayne, South Bend, Hammond, Lafayette, Noblesville, Terre Haute, Anderson, Kokomo, Elkhart, Mishawaka, Jeffersonville, New Albany and Richmond, the township departments around Indianapolis (Wayne, Pike, Decatur, Lawrence, Perry), and Vanderburgh County's Firefighter/Paramedic posting when it reopens.

Rows to read carefully

Indianapolis. The Become an IFD Firefighter page prints a three-year pay step as 2026 figures, $55,841 in the first year, $65,626 in the second and $90,569 in the third, and the 2025-26 posting (09387, October 20, 2025 to January 30, 2026) prints the same three figures. Recruits attend a 28-week paid school and graduate as certified EMTs; applicants must be 21 and under 40 at appointment; the next hiring process is slated for 2028, and IFD takes no lateral transfers.

Carmel. The 2026 Sworn Personnel Benefit Package, dated December 3, 2025, attaches the Carmel Fire Matrix for 2026: Firefighter $74,675 in Year 1, $76,169, $78,454 and $81,592 in Years 2 through 4, $87,303 in Year 5, $95,426 in Year 9, $103,060 in Year 10 and $117,134 in Year 15, then $500 longevity increases a year to a master firefighter salary with longevity of $122,134 at 25 years. Engineer starts at $89,878 in Year 5, Lieutenant at $97,603 in Year 5 and Captain at $114,155 in Year 8. Paramedic pay is 10 percent of 15-year firefighter pay ($11,713.40), ambulance assignment pays $2 an hour, and the compensation page prints a maximum bi-weekly Firefighter salary of $4,505.15.

Bloomington and Muncie. Two salary ordinances for 2026. Bloomington's Ordinance 2025-38 prints one rate per sworn rank: Probationary Officer $78,503, Firefighter 1st Class $83,503, Chauffeur/Lieutenant $86,760 and Captain $93,440, with longevity from $400 at two years to $12,500 at 25 or more, certification pay up to $1,500 and education pay of $500 or $1,200. Muncie's Ordinance 39-25 sets a base of $64,623.25 for every uniformed member below Deputy Chief, a first-year step at base minus 12 percent ($56,868.46), longevity from $1,615.58 in years 5 through 9 to $9,693.49 at 25 years, a 5 percent first-class rate in the eleventh year ($67,854.41), rank percentages from 4.5 to 14.5 percent, and EMS specialty pay of $30, $40 and $50 per shift.

Evansville, Fishers, Columbus, Southwest Allen County. Four pages with 2026 figures. Evansville prints $67,132 for the first probationary year, $70,132 in the second year and $75,066 in the fifth, tests in odd years for a two-year list and says to check back in 2027. Fishers prints Firefighter/EMT $74,562, $77,150 and $79,826 for the first three years, Firefighter/Paramedic $80,659 to $85,923 and a pension base of $97,896, effective January 1, 2026. Columbus prints a 2026 range of $70,733.00 to $95,979.60 with $3,000 paramedic pay, a $900 clothing allowance and college and military incentives, for a window that ran January 2 to February 2, 2026. Southwest Allen County Fire Protection District prints 2026 starting pay of $63,654 for Firefighter/EMT and $74,263 for Firefighter/Paramedic with a pension base of $84,263, and had struck through its career openings on the read date.

Gary, West Lafayette, Westfield. Three rows carried with a caveat. Gary's April 21, 2026 release on the 2026-2028 agreement with Local 359 formalizes the firefighter base salary at $56,650 with longevity up to $2,500 a year and a $1,500 clothing allowance, and prints no probationary or step rate; the base is carried as the start and the row is partial. West Lafayette's recruitment page prints 2025 salaries, $70,282.94 to start and a pension base of $81,156.42, with no 2026 figure. Westfield's class specification prints $73,356.61 for the Firefighter classification, and the department's 2025 benefits sheet prints $73,356.61 to $86,300.62 with the note that the salary includes scheduled overtime; the April 2026 lateral posting printed $77,350 to $91,000.

Fort Wayne, South Bend, Hammond, Lafayette, Noblesville. Null, each for a reason the document states. Fort Wayne's pages print a 20-week academy and an interest form and no salary. South Bend's recruitment page, updated April 30, 2026, says applications are closed and prints no salary. Hammond's employment page names benefits and requires at least EMT-B, with no figure. Lafayette's page prints the requirements, a 12- to 16-week academy, a closed 2026 window and a spring 2027 reopening, and no salary. Noblesville's 2025 salary ordinance prints bi-weekly maximums, $2,534.62 for a recruit or probationary firefighter, $2,726.92 for a pipeman and $3,200.96 for a Firefighter First Class at 2,912 hours a year, and no annual figure; the 2024 lateral posting printed $57,715 to $77,051.

Which application doors are open today?

• None with a dated window. Indianapolis's next process is slated for 2028; Evansville's next test is in 2027; Lafayette reopens in the spring of 2027; Columbus's 2026 window closed February 2; Westfield's lateral posting closed May 29, 2026; Carmel and Fishers were closed and taking job interest cards; South Bend was closed.
• Southwest Allen County was taking volunteer applications only, with its career openings struck through; Hammond invites EMT-B and paramedic-certified applicants to contact its recruiters; Gary's Fire Civil Service Commission announces its own application periods.
• Most departments require applicants to be 21 and under 40 at appointment under the 1977 pension fund rules, with exceptions for prior members and veterans; Columbus prints 18 to 40.
