How to Become a Texas Correctional Officer: The TDCJ Pathway (2026)

Police work runs through a TCOLE academy. A Texas state trooper job asks for 60 college hours before you apply. TDCJ does not. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice will hire a correctional officer at 18 with a high school diploma or GED, pay you while you train, and put you on a published salary ladder from month one (TDCJ, Corrections as a Career and Eligibility Criteria, retrieved 2026-08-22).

That is a state prison job. It is not a TCOLE peace officer license and it is not a TCOLE county jailer license. If you later want a cop job, TCOLE's floor is stricter than TDCJ's. Both are below. Do not mix them.

30-second answer. Age 18. Diploma or GED (or 12 college semester hours). U.S. citizen or authorized to work. Paid academy, about 240 hours and about 6 weeks. CO I starts at $52,441 a year ($25.21 an hour) on a non-maximum unit. Class A misdemeanor is a 10-year TDCJ bar, not TCOLE's lifetime bar. Apply at tdcj.texas.gov/co.

TDCJ eligibility (the prison door)

TDCJ employs about 20,000 correctional officers across more than 100 units (TDCJ, Be a Correctional Officer, page updated 2026-07-22, retrieved 2026-08-22). The floor:

• U.S. citizen, or an alien authorized to work in the United States.
• At least 18 years old.
• High school diploma from a TDCJ-approved accredited public or private school, a TDCJ-approved home school, or a state-issued GED. A military GED is accepted (TDCJ, CO FAQ, retrieved 2026-08-22). A college transcript showing at least 12 semester hours, with the school name and certification seal, may also be accepted as the education equivalent. Applicants still in high school may apply 90 days before graduation.
• Not on active military duty unless on terminal leave. You may apply within six months of eligibility.
• Not discharged from the armed forces under dishonorable conditions. Bad Conduct and General-Other Than Honorable discharges are reviewed case by case.
• Male applicants ages 18 through 25 who live in the U.S. and are not already TDCJ employees must show Selective Service registration or an exemption.
• Able to perform the essential functions of a CO, with or without reasonable accommodation.
• Pass TDCJ's pre-employment or pre-assignment drug test (PD-71) and a physical agility test.

You do not need college. You do not need a TCOLE license to start this job. You do not need prior corrections experience (TDCJ, Corrections as a Career, retrieved 2026-08-22).

TDCJ criminal-history floor (not TCOLE)

TDCJ's own list, from the eligibility page. For TDCJ purposes a conviction includes a paid fine, time served, probation (including deferred adjudication), and court-ordered restitution.

PD-75 is the longer policy: Applicants with Pending Criminal Charges or Prior Criminal Convictions.

That is the TDCJ hiring floor. It is not 37 TAC 217.1. A Class A that is old enough for TDCJ can still be a lifetime TCOLE bar if you later want a peace officer license. Read the overlay below before you treat this job as a guaranteed cop pipeline.

Paid academy

If you are hired through the regular applicant process, you are a state employee on the first day of the TDCJ Training Academy. You do not pay tuition. State employees are paid monthly (TDCJ, CO FAQ, retrieved 2026-08-22).

The FAQ is the primary for the regular path:

Conflict, not averaged. The part-time CO page also says a six-week Pre-Service Training Academy, attended full time. The salary page part-time note says 8 weeks of academy plus 1 week of on-the-job training at the unit, paid at full-time CO I during that stretch. This page uses the FAQ's "about 6 weeks / 240 hours" for the regular full-time path. Confirm the class you are assigned.

Full-time pay (effective September 1, 2025)

Veterans and degrees start higher

Prior government correctional-custody or law-enforcement time can place you on the matching months-of-service step if the former employer verifies dates and good standing.

Vacation, sick leave, paid holidays, retirement, group life and health insurance, dental, free meals while on duty, uniforms and equipment furnished, laundry of uniforms at no cost (eligibility page, retrieved 2026-08-22). The salary footnotes refer to ERS contributors. This page does not invent a pension multiplier.

TCOLE overlay (if you later want a cop job)

TDCJ training does not issue a TCOLE peace officer license. County jailers work for sheriffs and are a different door, licensed by TCOLE. Do not treat TDCJ time as a TCOLE card.

If you move to a peace officer path, the license floor is 37 TAC 217.1, the same four lines as TCOLE peace officer license requirements:

1. Age. 21, or 18 with an associate's degree, 60 semester hours, or an honorable discharge after two years of active service. 37 TAC 217.1(b)(1)(A). TDCJ's 18-year hire does not by itself meet TCOLE.
2. Criminal history. Never convicted of or placed on court-ordered community supervision for anything above Class B. A Class A conviction is a lifetime bar. Only Class B carries the ten-year lookback. 37 TAC 217.1(b)(4), (b)(6). Family violence bars on community supervision as well as conviction. 217.1(b)(7).
3. Driver's license. TCOLE requires that you are not prohibited from operating a motor vehicle. 217.1(b)(8). A Texas license is an agency hiring rule, said separately.
4. Citizenship. U.S. citizen, or a legal permanent resident who is an honorably discharged veteran with two years of service and has applied for citizenship. 217.1(b)(17). TDCJ's "alien authorized to work" line is broader than TCOLE's.

DPS still asks for 60 college earned hours to apply as a trooper, with a military or full-time peace-officer substitute. That is a DPS gate, not a TDCJ gate. See How to Become a Texas State Trooper.

How to apply

1. Read Eligibility Criteria and PD-75 against your own record.
2. Apply through TDCJ's correctional officer page or the job search. The CO FAQ says leave the posting number blank (033009 CID).
3. Pass the physical agility test and the drug test.
4. Show up to the academy you are assigned. You are on payroll day one.

Hiring time is not a published clock. The FAQ says it depends on unit need, a complete application, applicant volume, and how fast former employers return references.
