Firefighter Fitness Before Academy 2026: 48 of 81 Cardiac

The U.S. Fire Administration's 2025 on-duty count is provisional: 81 firefighters died on duty, and 48 of those deaths were cardiovascular events. The same page lists 48 deaths from stress or overexertion. That is not a CPAT problem. That is a heart-and-recovery problem you start training months before anyone hands you a recruit schedule.

The academy will still test you. Dallas Fire-Rescue uses the Candidate Physical Ability Test: eight events, a 50-pound vest, pass or fail at 10 minutes 20 seconds. Denton Fire does not. Houston Fire uses its own Physical Ability Test Packet. Train the sheet on the notice. Then keep going, because the job outlasts the clock.

This page is not a 12-week workout. The workout lives on firefighter physical fitness training plan and Fit to Serve, Part II: Exercise. This page is why the work starts before day one.

The Test Is a Gate, Not the Job

CPAT is one licensed pre-hire test. Fail one event, or go over 10:20, and the attempt fails (IAFF/IAFC). Dallas Fire-Rescue uses it. Denton Fire runs its own department PAT. Houston Fire uses a Physical Ability Test Packet. Spec: What Is the CPAT?. Denton sheet: How to Pass the Denton Fire Department PAT.

The test asks for about ten minutes of loaded work. The job asks you to work near your limit, recover, and do it again, in heat, on a crew, for a career. A 12-week CPAT block is the right way to pass the gate. It is not the whole engine. Hardness of the academy itself is a named clock, not a washout percentage: How Hard Is the Fire Academy?.

What the 2025 Fatality Count Actually Says

USFA, retrieved 2026-08-23, on firefighter fatalities:

2025 (provisional)Count
On-duty firefighter deaths81
Cardiovascular events48
Stress or overexertion48
Vehicle collisions13
Assaults3
Career / volunteer / wildland / part-time33 / 39 / 4 / 5

The same table lists 72 on-duty deaths in 2024. USFA flags 2025 as provisional pending the annual report. This page does not print a "typical year 45 percent" line. Print the year and the table.

The 48 cardiac deaths are the reason pre-academy training is about the engine, not a max bench.

Safety Stand Down 2026 Already Ran

The fire service spent the third week of June on this exact subject. Safety Stand Down 2026 ran June 14-20. The theme was "Firefighter FITNESS: Fit to Serve, Fit for Life" (NVFC announcement, February 10, 2026). It is a joint campaign of the International Association of Fire Chiefs Safety, Health, and Survival Section, the National Volunteer Fire Council, the National Fire Protection Association, the Fire Department Safety Officers Association, and the International Association of Fire Fighters. Official site: safetystanddown.org.

The week is seven topics: Foundations, Intentional, Technique, Nutrition, Evaluation, Sleep, Strategies for success. Two of those days are food and sleep. That is not filler. If the service parks a national week on fitness, food, and sleep, that is the list a candidate should already be living.

Start With the Engine

Cardiovascular work is the base. Three to four sessions a week of steady, conversational-pace running, rucking, cycling, or rowing, 30 to 45 minutes, builds the system that fails first under fireground stress. Add one or two interval sessions once that base exists: one to three minutes of hard work, a short recovery, repeat. A structure fire is intervals, not a steady jog.

This is the same engine block as Fit to Serve, Part II. Bias the intervals to the sheet you will actually take.

Build a Frame That Transfers

Strength that transfers is carrying, dragging, lifting, and climbing. Prioritize squats and deadlifts, loaded carries, step-ups and stairs, and pulling work for ladders and forcible entry. Grip is usually the first thing to fail. You do not need a one-rep max. You need to move awkward loads when your hands and legs are already tired.

The CPAT vest is 50 pounds for the whole test, plus a 25-pound stair pack on the climb (IAFF). This page does not print a folklore turnout-gear weight as an NFPA figure. Ask the academy for its fitness packet.

Combine Once the Base Is There

The mistake is training only in clean, rested conditions. Once the engine and the frame exist, pair a loaded carry with stairs. Follow a strength circuit with an interval. Put a vest on some of the conditioning. That is the condition in which people fail events and, later, get hurt.

Week-by-week sessions: firefighter physical fitness training plan. Event-specific 12-week CPAT block: how to train for the CPAT.

Recovery Is Part of the Training

Stand Down named Nutrition on Wednesday and Sleep on Friday. Recovery is where the adaptation happens. You cannot out-train short sleep and poor eating, and the academy will expose both. Diet page: Fit to Serve, Part I. This page does not print an unsourced sleep-hour prescription.

Why Before the Academy Matters

Dallas Fire-Rescue's trainee academy is 28 weeks. TEEX's face-to-face recruit academy is 12 weeks and 545 hours at Brayton. Houston's non-certified academy is about 9 months. Those clocks are long enough that arriving unconditioned costs you, and costs the department a slot. This page does not print a washout percentage. Departments do not publish one statewide rate.

You do not control the hiring calendar. You control whether the body you bring can do the work on day one and still have a heart that treats hard work as normal twenty years later. Texas order of operations: how to become a firefighter in Texas. Start from the fire pathway.
