Firefighter Age Limit 2026: FDNY 17.5, 29, and 21

No single U.S. firefighter age. FDNY is 17.5 to file, not 29 by the application period, and 21 to appoint. Texas Chapter 143 fire is 18 and not 36 in adopting cities.

Firefighter Age Limit 2026: FDNY 17.5, 29, and 21

There is no single United States firefighter age. The number that can fail you is on the city's posting, and it may not match the state statute or the certification body.

30-second answer. Open three documents: the city's firefighter posting, the state civil-service statute if the city adopted one, and the state certification page, which may print no age at all. FDNY is at least 17 and a half by the end of the application period, must not have reached the 29th birthday by the beginning of the application period, and must have reached 21 to be appointed. Texas Local Government Code 143.023, only in cities that adopted Chapter 143, says a person may not take a beginning fire exam unless the person is at least 18 and not 36 or older. TCFP Basic Structure Fire Suppression prints no age.

Last verified: department age lines 2026-09-03. Lubbock, Abilene, and Arlington Prevention re-read 2026-09-03. Texas statutes, TCFP, TCOLE, DSHS, and the FDNY FAQ 2026-08-29.

Start from the fire pathway. Texas hire order is in how to become a firefighter in Texas. Whether the city tests under Chapter 143 is a different page: civil service vs non-civil service fire departments in Texas.

What Is the Firefighter Age Limit in the United States?

It is not one number. Three documents can disagree, and you will meet that disagreement in person:

  1. The city's current firefighter posting. This is the line that decides whether you sit this cycle. Measuring points differ: written exam, application, hire, oath of office, or the end of the academy.
  2. The state civil-service statute, if the city adopted one. In Texas that is Chapter 143, and it applies only to municipalities that meet the coverage test and have voted to adopt it.
  3. The state certification body. TCFP Basic Structure Fire Suppression lists training, the structure exam, medical training equal to EMR, ECA, EMT or paramedic, a fingerprint background check, and an application with a fee. It does not list a minimum or maximum age.

A certificate you already hold does not override a hire-age rule. A 36-year-old can hold TCFP and DSHS cards and still be ineligible for a Chapter 143 beginning fire exam.

What Is the FDNY Age Limit?

FDNY is the worked example because that is the search. JoinFDNY's firefighter FAQ, citing Section 54 of the New York Civil Service Law and Section 15-103 of the Administrative Code, prints four clocks:

ClockWhat JoinFDNY prints
FileAt least 17 and a half years of age by the end of the application period
Sit the examMust not have reached the 29th birthday by the beginning of the application period
AppointMust have reached the 21st birthday
Military age creditMilitary duty as defined in Section 243 of the New York State Military Law may be deducted from actual age, up to seven years

The same FAQ uses two phrasings for the 29th birthday, and they are not identical. The legal block says you must not have reached your 29th birthday by the beginning of the application period. An earlier sentence says you should not reach your 29th birthday by the beginning of the application process. Treat the application-period line as the one that can fail you.

A third FDNY clock is not the default 29. If you are on the Special Military list for the Firefighter Exam, JoinFDNY says you cannot turn 36 by the beginning of the current application period. That is a different list. FDNY also states it does not have the authority to waive the age requirement.

JoinFDNY's FAQ says age requirements are not illegal. It states that it is a federal law to have a maximum age requirement for the hiring of firefighters, names the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 (ADEA), and says the Act was amended in 1995 to allow states and political subdivisions of states to impose age limitations for hiring and retirement of police officers and firefighters as long as the requirement was in effect prior to March 3, 1983, and in certain other circumstances, citing Title 29, United States Code, Section 623(j). That paragraph is FDNY's FAQ, not a legal opinion from this page.

What Is the Firefighter Age Limit in Texas?

Four Texas documents, four jobs. Do not collapse them.

Chapter 143 fire, adopting cities only. Texas Local Government Code 143.023(a): a person may not take an entrance examination for a beginning position in the fire department unless the person is at least 18 years of age but not 36 years of age or older. Subsection (b): a person may not be certified as eligible for a beginning position in a fire department if the person is 36 years of age or older. Subsection (d): the applicant must also meet the legal requirements for future certification by the Commission on Fire Protection Personnel Standards and Education. Chapter 143 applies only to a municipality that has a population of 10,000 or more, has a paid fire or police department, and has voted to adopt the chapter, or whose adoption was later validated. Non-143 departments set their own age. The posting controls.

Chapter 143 police is not the fire cap. The same subsection (a) says a person may not take a beginning police exam unless the person is at least 18. It does not add a 36 clause for police. Do not read "Chapter 143 age cap is 36" onto a police door.

TCFP Basic Structure Fire Suppression. The live Basic tab does not print a minimum or maximum age. Do not invent a TCFP age.

DSHS EMS personnel. Texas DSHS initial certification says you must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or GED. That is the EMS license floor, not a firefighter hire age.

TCOLE is a peace-officer license, not a fire hire. Occupations Code 1701.309, reprinted in the TCOLE Statutes and Rules Handbook dated November 1, 2025: the commission by rule shall set 21 years of age as the minimum age for obtaining a license as an officer. The rules must provide that a person at least 18 may be licensed if the person has completed and received credit for at least 60 hours of study at an accredited college or university or received an associate degree, or received an honorable discharge from the United States armed forces after at least two years of service. A department may set a higher floor (Occupations Code 1701.003(c)). A DPS hiring age that is not this statute is a department rule, not TCOLE, and it is not a firefighter age.

Texas cities that adopted Chapter 143 do not all reprint 18 and not 36. The city's own page and the statute can disagree. If you are 36 or older in a 143 city, the statute still says you may not take a beginning fire exam. Call the department about the city's own number before you spend a cycle.

Those clocks disagree with each other and with the statute.
Abilene Fire, Probationary / RecruitMust be 18 - 35 years of age by the start date (ASCII hyphen). Certified and Non-Certified sit on the same card.Start date. The page does not name exam day vs hire day.Statute is 18 and not 36 at the exam. Abilene names the start date.

Three years paid full-time firefighter in a civil-service fire department, TCFP Basic Structural, and EMT-Basic.Start date. The page does not name exam day vs hire day.Same numbers as Recruit, different glyph, different door.

Houston prints the 18 / under-36 lines on both its Non-Certified and Certified trainee blocks.

San Antonio's applicant FAQ: "Do you make any exceptions on the age limit, such as for prior military service? No, there are no exceptions made for our age requirement, and prior military service does not influence the set limits."

Texas is not one 18-to-35 band. Irving prints 40. San Antonio prints 34. Arlington prints 46 at exam, 45 at hire, and 21 for Prevention. College Station prints no upper limit. Dallas, Fort Worth, and Waco track 36 at the exam. Lubbock splits exam-18 from hire-36. Abilene names 18-35 by the start date on both the Recruit and Lateral cards.

The Lubbock careers page also says the department is not currently accepting applications. That is a hiring-board fact, not an age rule.

What Ages Do Large Fire Departments Print?

These lines are from each city's own requirements page, read 2026-09-03, except FDNY, which is the 2026-08-29 JoinFDNY FAQ.

Denver's Civil Service FAQ says you must be at least 21 to apply for a Denver Police Officer or Firefighter position, and the minimum age for EMT applicants is 18. The June 2026 entry-level firefighter informational booklet says you must be 21 or older on or before the date of application. The two documents agree on 21 for firefighter and split firefighter from EMT. That is not the same as saying every Denver public-safety job is 21.

Which Departments Did Not Yield a Live Age Line?

On 2026-09-03 the live bodies for Plano Fire-Rescue eligibility and Frisco Fire recruiting did not print an age line that could be quoted. This page does not guess those two. Open the city's current posting.

How Do You Confirm the Age That Applies to You?

  1. Open the city's current firefighter posting, not a summary of last year's cycle.
  2. Write down the measuring point: exam, application, hire, oath, or academy end. Those are not interchangeable.
  3. If the city is a Texas civil-service fire department, open Texas Local Government Code 143.023. If the city's number and the statute disagree, call the department before you spend a cycle.
  4. Open the certification body. TCFP Basic may print no age. DSHS 18 is the EMS card. TCOLE 21, with an 18 path, is a peace-officer license.
